So I told my husband I want a rifle...

That title just made me snicker something fierce. DH wouldn't be surprised, but I pictured my Mom, my Bros, and My In Laws faces if I did the same... heheh ... think I'll post that on FB just to see the

and

I get.

Though if Dad or my Uncle A are on they'll

and maybe have a recommendation... I'll be sure and pass it along if I get one.

Edit... put it out there, we'll see what happens.

For home defense, nothin' beats a pump shotgun. A used Mossberg 500 is a good bet. For the rest, you've gotten some good advice already.

Don't go to a pawnbroker - go to a real gunstore. They will get you what you need in a used gun, including the advice on what you should have and what you can get for used prices. Check out a couple places to compare prices - there's a lot of difference in shops.

I love my little pea shooter.... Doesn't do much but freak a dog out or scar a cat. But I feel so intimidated by a gun, its not going to happen any time soon for me. So I understand you situation!

mmmm i thought shotgun scattered the shot? I would like to be able to take care of large pests 2 legged and 4. Anything that threatens the kiddies or chickens really. We are in the country so I would like to be prepared. I would like to be able to take down a deer if the need arises. I think providing our own meat is a skill we need to work on. Also we are surrounded by hunters and we have had severely wounded ones collapse in the field and sit there in pain because the closest help I have that owns a gun is an hour away. Not fun.

The biggest challenge is finding something I can afford and that I can shoot. I want it powerful enough to do what I need without knocking me on my rear. I am also very short so honestly add 2 inches to a youth rifle stock and I am set. I have to use a kiddie bow too. So embarassing.

Yes a shotgun scatters its shot but in a set pattern an only if you use shot. You can shoot slugs an its one bullet.

You can get a single shot 12 gauge youth gun pretty cheep an add a 2 inch slip on shoulder pad. 12 gauge will give you more options than a 20 gauge an if it has to much of a kick for you you can shoot low brass shells that dont kick as much.. But remember that the less the gun weighs the more it kicks. That's why I shoot a double barrel, it kicks less. Its heavy but I can hold an shoot it one handed so its not that bad.
