So I tried my hand at making a tiny batch of organic chicken feed....

ok. i was thinking processed such as pellets or mash...

I was thinking processed as in ingredients that are broken down to scientific components and then "reassembled" as a formulation.

I suppose I can accept "grind, roll or cracked" as a process.. It is known things are lost or altered when a grain is ground. Hence the need for all the formulated additives at the bottom of the ingredients list...

To me the Country Side, looks to contain several nice processed grains, and no soy! Making it a nice commercial mix. It does however have fish meal, which if one is concerned about the health of our oceans, one should try to avoid it.

I'm using Countryside Naturals for my layers and chicks. They love it!...and it is so healthy for them. I don't think chickens were ever meant to eat soy, plus about 90% of American soy crops are GM now. I just wish the shipping was a little less. It's around $40 (including shipping) for one 50 lb bag...I must be crazy

do you know other chicken keepers in your area? i get my Countryside feed through a local buyers club (and we are starting another one). when they ship in large quantities (i think it's 500 lbs and up) then they can ship it on a pallet for a lot cheaper. my shipping ends up being $4/50 lbs. i don't think i could buy it otherwise.

I only know of one other person in my town who has chickens, and they use Purina Mills. You're lucky to be a part of a buyers club to reduce your shipping price. I just can't get myself to buy the cheap stuff.
