So is this the dreaded Chicken Math I've been warned about?

I give them cracked corn and ground oatmeal, clears up within a day or so and I haven't had anymore problems..
Oh sure, pick the two things I don't have in the house! LOL But I do have the plain yogurt and Vaseline, so I'm off once again into the fray to fight the battle of the backsides! I will win - because I'm bigger and I cheat!

The good news is that pasty butt only lasts for a week or so. Hang in there!

Am I supposed to be washing butts?
I've raised birds for 20 years and never washed a chicks's butt.

I think pasting up is strongly related to the chicks being too warm. This is usually too small a brooder, with a nice warm area but not enough space to get fully away from the heat to a much cooler area. Folks have a tendency to be afraid of them getting too cold, when actually being too warm all the time can cause more issues.

That's a really good thought. Thanks! In our case, though, I don't think the brooder size is the issue. The lamp is over the middle of the half closest to the outside wall of the room, where it is a little chillier, and they have lots of room to run around and explore. They tend to use that half of the brooder more at night when our temps have been dropping down into the zero and below range. We haven't seen them showing any signs of any temperature issues - they run and chase, eat and drink, then plop down for a nap wherever they happen to be so they must be pretty comfortable! LOL No piling up right under the light because they are too cold, no panting and going to the side of the brooder furthest from the light, no distressed peeping...just the annoying pasty butt! I will be sure to keep an eye on the temp in there, though. The thermometer has been at 93 degrees right at chick height, and doesn't deviate. (for you 95 or nothing purists, my apologies - but that happens to be the temp they seem to be most content with - LOL)
