She and her husband CANNOT just take the horse back and care for it. That's why I suggested a friend or trusted aquaintance do it and get part of the sales price, just so they have some control over where the horse ends up and they don't end up getting ripped off by a couple of scammers.

If you are not physically able to care for it, then you hire someone to care for it (as you suggested) or give it away. But the right thing to do is to TAKE IT BACK no matter what obstacles are in the way. You do what is right because it is right, not because it is convenient or because it is a money issue. You always do what is right because it is right. If nothing else, take it back and call animal contorl to come take it even if they euth it. It can't be left in the situation it is in.

Hi-I am new to this forum but this really touches my heart.
I wish you were closer to me. I would take the horse in a second. I have 11 - what's one more. Is there some way I can help?

Um, Installments? on a $1000 horse? If you don't have $1000 to your name that you can pay it all up front, then you shouldn't have a horse. To me that is clue number one that something is very wrong, and clue number one that they don't have the resources to take care of a horse. My wife has horses (they are NOT mine), and a $1000 is very quickly spent on vet bills.

Like I always tell my wife "you wouldn't have this problem if it were a four wheeler". She hasn't traded in the horses yet:(

The OP didn't really have a choice at the time, no use discussing the spilt milk.

If I didn't live half a continent away I'd do it for free- get the horse, sell it to someone reputable and give the OP all the sales price to help pay medical bills.

Please thoroughy read the first post folks, and don't tell the OP what she "shoulda/woulda/coulda" done.

Actually RanchHand your not half a contenent away lol more like 15 hours. She is in the lower half of NH.
I have been talking to Fire Dove over this mess and If I had more property I would go to CT and pick up the horse.
My Physical limitations make me unable to care for a horse but thats why I keep my handy dandy idiot around.

To the people who have issues with her taking back the horse, first of all her husband works 2 jobs, she was broken from the waist down in a car accident and has been wheel cair bound for almost a year, she is still unable to put weight on one foot, and will likely be in that chair for a good time to come.
There is still a good chance there is a surgery to be done before she can even get into therapy and rehab.
Everyone close to Fire Dove is doing everything we can to help her out, How dare you judge?
These people have a written contract and its up to them to pay for the horse and vet it to make it sound as it was when it left her barn.
I will say anyone who takes the word of a trainer who isnt a legal Vet is not areliable person to start with, IF a trainer told me the spine was off I would be getting Xrays to find out if she was in fact correct.
I certainly wouldnt take an unqualified opinion as fact. would you?

Sorry folks, I was not online for a couple of days.

I dug up the link to the video made of my horse last winter/spring. I've never been the best at spotting when a horse is just a little off, I generally left that to more knowledgeable friends and the vet since I didn't have very much over all experience with horses, George was my first horse and it was a learning experience right from the start. Anyways, after watching the video very closely there is a possibility that he is off a bit at the walk in some of the video. I could just be seeing something that isn't there based on my worries, I don't know who on here can tell me for sure, but here is the link http://www.onetruemedia.com/otm_sit...kin_id=701&utm_source=otm&utm_medium=text_url The person doing the tiny stick jumps in the video is the sister to the leasee at the time and is not a very experienced rider, the other rider was the girl who leased him last winter/spring who has far more years of riding behind her but is still no expert. The girls made the video so it isn't top quality or professional, just something they put together.

I will add that the "friend" who took George watched this video before they got him so if there is an issue, they should have both mentioned it to me, and mentioned they had a problem with it, long before now.

The person who has my horse right now is taking care of feeding him and most of his bills. At this point we are going to pay for the doxycycline to get him better but we can't afford it until the end of this month because we have a lot of bills of our own, especially medical. The dosage required is what makes it so expensive, my horse will need 8000mg/day aka 80 100mg tablets. The cheapest Doxy I have found is through KV Vet , 500 100mg tablets for $35.95 per bottle. Doxy has to be taken for 28 days at that dose meaning we need 5 bottles of pills to get him treated so $179.75 If someone knows of somewhere where I can get 2240 100mg Doxy pills for cheaper, or higher dose pills or suspension, I'd love to know where! I found 300mg suspension but it was significantly more expensive than the tablets since it was 300mg in the whole bottle for the same cost as the 500 tablets.

I've been researching Lyme in horses and there is a lot of conflicting research. Half say it causes severe effects in horses, other studies show no significant symptoms at all. We know my horse is positive for Lyme but we don't even know for sure that that is what caused his lameness in the first place as even the vet attending him now has said that without an x-ray or ultrasound there is no way to tell what exactly is ailing him.

We may end up bringing our horse back here. We have talked about it and my husband is willing to do the extra work if need be. The biggest concern is that my horse has been colicky in the past month and I am still off my feet so there would be no way for me to keep a close eye on him through the day. That worries me since I'd hate for him to go down and no one being able to see him or help him.

If we can get my horse better while he is in CT then we will sell him from the barn where he is staying right now. It's not the most ideal situation, but the person who has him is willing to pay his feed and hoof care for the time being which really helps us out.

I don't have any friends around here that can take my horse in at this time. Most everyone I know is on a shoestring budget or has medical problems of their own. I have very few friends closer than an hour from me since my husband and I moved away from the area we knew to get a home where we could keep George in the first place since I wanted to have him at my house, not boarded where I could only see him occasionally. The person who has my horse has offered to have him trailered back here on their dime if that is what we choose to do. If I was not in the wheelchair right now I would go down to CT immediately and evaluate him for myself and if we weren't drowning in medical and other bills I would find my own vet to check him out.

We placed my horse when and how we did because we needed a good home for him and this "friend" offered to buy him if she could make payments. It seemed like the right thing at the time. My husband was already overwhelmed taking care of me and the other animals here, plus his 2 jobs and the house. We needed some help and this seemed like the right thing to do.

We have worked out most of the issues with the person keeping my horse right now. I decided that in my current state of physical and mental breakdown, plus legal troubles over the accident that put this whole situation in motion, I don't have the energy to fight over who owes who money. I just want to get my horse and myself better and worry about anything else later.

I'd go contract with any new business here on out. And throw everything and anything you can think of in it. If it comes to court, you'll be in a much better position:)
Sorry this happened... sad this happened
