Dear Community,
I am going to be hatching my first quails pretty soon. What advice would you give? Is there any special sensitivities they have that I should be aware of? What is something you enjoy the most about quails! And what is something that you would rather not deal with? Also, I am shipping my eggs. What are the possible pros and cons of this? Any awful/amazing experiences with this? Thank you!

With hatching Quail you need to make sure they have crushed food and plenty of water. I use a cherry jar lid and put marbles in it so the chicks don't drown. Quails (At any age love to have little hutches so they can hide. When the chicks are old enough to get off the heating lamp, they need sand to bathe in. The coop or cage that you keep them in need constant airflow because there poop can hold bacteria in it so if they breathe it constantly it could cause some problems. Can't wait for you to experience the joy of Quails!!! Good Luck!!!:celebrate:love

Thankyou for this advice! ^^

Over the past 2 years I have had 22 Northern Bobwhites and a handful of coturnix quail. They are so much fun! I would definitely say that coturnix quail are MUCH more tame than bobwhites. My favorite quail was a Texas A&M. He was so amazing! I would let him walk around the house, and he let me rock him like a baby. My bobwhites are awesome, but they do not like to be held or touched. Every once and a while they escape, and I have to chase them down with a net. They FREAK OUT when you hold them, one of them sadly broke her wing when I was holding her because she was flapping and squirming too hard : ( But male bobwhites have the prettiest call in the spring. For your first quail I would recommend coturnix quail because they are so much more calm. Bobwhites are pretty good too, but they are wild birds and a lot harder to handle. Unless you tame them very early on (which I did not do too well) A good thing about bobwhites though is that they are SUPER easy to sex. The males have black and white heads, and the females have brown and tawny head. Some coturnix quail can be feather sexed, but I have never been able to do it. Anyway, have fun with your quail and good luck!

Thanks so much for the thought! I have always thought bob whites were beautiful but as this is my first time... I'm going with the safer option of coturnix. Maybe in the future that will be an option as I gain experience!
P.S. Sounds like a crazy adventure and one of those "i didn't plan this" moments as you chase down those crazy bobwhites hahaha
