I recommend youtube, too. A friend taught me the basics of a knit stitch but I taught myself how to cast on with a method I liked better, how to knit continental style (meaning my hands never leave the needles), how to purl, how to cast off, cabling, & more. Go to Goodwill and get some big, fat needles, and think, light-colored yarn. Then dive in! Mess it up, make it ugly, drop stitches, and explore. Without trying to work on a project, per se, you don't have the pressure to produce a perfect finished product.
Knitting is a joy.
