so tell me, how hard is it to learn to knit?

I recommend youtube, too. A friend taught me the basics of a knit stitch but I taught myself how to cast on with a method I liked better, how to knit continental style (meaning my hands never leave the needles), how to purl, how to cast off, cabling, & more. Go to Goodwill and get some big, fat needles, and think, light-colored yarn. Then dive in! Mess it up, make it ugly, drop stitches, and explore. Without trying to work on a project, per se, you don't have the pressure to produce a perfect finished product.

Knitting is a joy.

I taught myself how to knit today. I went to my son's girlfriends because I taught her how to crochet, but I wanted to learn to knit. I bought a 4 dollar book from Walmart, and away I went. However, I haven't got the purl stitch down, but I will. It is fun. I am going to make a scarf.

CONGRATS!! See... not that hard!

If you're good with spacial relations, the purl stitch is just doing the knit stitch backwards. That's how I conceptualized it and was able to teach myself to do it, anyway.

I was having trouble with a new-to-me stitch called the fisherman's rib, so did a google search. After surfing a few pages I found one that made sense to me and was able to fix what I was doing wrong.

You can do the same!

BTW - lesson for you... ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do a guage swatch. That's what I was working on when I realized that I couldn't figure out the fisherman's rib. If I hadn't done a guage, I would have started the projecct and gotten frustrated mid-way through.

Knitting is really easy to pick up - there are only really two basic stitches.
Once you get them to memory - you can do ANYTHING.

My mom taught me to knit when I was 5 and she was teaching a group of schoolchildren, I tagged along and picked it up as well.

And....knitting uses less yarn than crochet. So, if you're motivated to save $ by making gifts this year, knitted gifts would be even better for your budget than crocheted ones.

I'm a knitter and whenever I've got a problem I got to youtube for answers. They have videos that can show you how to knit.

Remember that knitting is slower to do than crocheting.

Also: Ravelry.com is a major website/org/forum and you can learn from there. You have to ask to join on the site and then wait until they accept you. It's a fantastic site.

I taught myself the knit stitch, other than that, I'm lost. I really wish I knew someone around me that knit... I'm going to try youtube, thanks for the suggestion!!
