OMG, tell me about it. Went the first time and bought 4 BO's, brought them home, hubby didn't know, just shook his head. Went back two days later, hubby wanted PBR's, didn't have them so ended up with 2 BA's. Had to go buy more chick feed, evil store, of course, puts chick feed by chicks, came home with 2 PBR's (honest, they were for hubby
) and 2 SLW?. I put the ? there because they were marked SLW, but they are TINY and they are RED with barred wings.
Can't help but think that they are not going to grow up to be SLW's. Anyway, I have 10 chicks now. Went to store again, they had a huge amount of straight run banties, but we were going out of town for the weekend, so I opted to stop on my way home that Sunday. Thought they were done selling chicks
. Went back yesterday to get bell pepper plants, and they had some mystery chicks. All were sick looking, several had the worst case of pasty butt. I spent quite a bit of time cleaning butts, some were so bad I couldn't do anything with them without some very warm water. Got into argument with store personnel about the deplorable conditions of their chicks.
I told everyone I seen that the chicks needed some serious attention. I asked to see a manager, one wasn't available (vacation). Which, in my mind, explains the deplorable conditions. When mgr. is there, chicks are kept healthy, someone actually is dedicated to that section of the store, when he isn't, I guess they don't get any attention. Got a couple of patrons in on the act of arguing with store personnel because they came back there while I was cleaning pasty butts and asked me what I was doing, and I responded "saving their lives". Left the store sad and furious!
Going back this morning (get paid today) in hopes that pasty butts are still alive so I can purchase them, bring them home and save their lives. Going to talk to the mgr. as soon as he is back from his fun in the sun. I'm not sure yet how many I will end up with.
I spent my day off today trying to expand and reinforce my chicken yard. I only had chicken wire because the yard is within a privacy fenced backyard and THAT yard is within a chain-linked yard with 3 large dogs - not a big predator haven. However, my chicks can get through the wire enough that I was concerned of tangles or escapes. At any rate, I put up 25ft of hardware cloth (by myself.. ugh). Then, I pulled up the end fence where it turned left to go to the house and turned it right to create another 80 or so sq/ft. NOW I have to fix my expanded house, put hardware cloth on the last part of the fence, and find a way to get my gate to work propperly - then I am DONE.
Took the big kids out today and let them hang out in the dog kennel - it was like a whole different place than the last few days because I put a branch in for a perch. They thought they had died and joined the circus - they LOVED it!!!
