The point about the hurricane is a very good point. There is considerable difference in birds laying down and birds standing hunched up. Chickens that are still moving, generally are fine, but lethargic chickens, unaware chickens are much closer to death than the other.

Always go by how they are acting, do they look miserable but able to walk fine or do they look unaware and only move one or two steps and stop again. The first are fine, the second needs interventions.
