Soap Makers Help!

Quote:
You people are bad bad bad! I must admit to loving it when I made homemade soap. I have this huge love of homemade soap! Essential oils, herbs...........

For a while, when I was sick, I was able to purchase soap at Applegate from this wonderful soapmaker. Now Applegate pulled up stakes and took off to Mulberry and I don't know where she went. I haven't made it to many of the craft fairs to look for her. I do have her info though....

And my friend, with whom I made soap, told me she still has a big bucket coconut oil... if it's still good. Unfortunately the meth cookers have ruined soapmaking and now you have to purchase your lye online. No running down to the dollar general....

Stop it! Stop!!!.... I will not talk about soap making....

Now let's talk about herbal cosmetics......

Did I mention that I have tons of soapmaking, herbal cosmetic books....

Get out of my head soapmakers!!!

But we would love to see all the lovely creations that you re bound to be making at any moment

I have good (or bad depending on your point of view) news for you, insiderart.

Many of us ARE finding lye locally. I get mine at Ace Hardware - a brand called Rooto - 100% sodium hydroxide crystals.

Others have had luck finding another brand locally. Additionally, Morgaine has found some online that is even less expensive even after paying shipping.

Can't wait to see it! With the first sale date being in June, do you have more bars coming online before then? If not, I hope you're soaping more now to replace what is going to be bought up big time!

Haven't had a chance to do much soaping in the last couple of weeks. Between dd turning 11 and her party (I found her a serger sewing machine for $75!) and the dogs are getting loads of work...

But I did make soap two days ago, have to unmold it today, it's cucumber. And I got my mold from Kelsei's Creations yesterday!! I can't wait to use it today. Just have to decide what I'm going to make first in it..lol.

Oh, it's been a while. I believe it is 1.5# of oil, depending on how much liquid you use for your lye solution.

Sorry, it's been a while since I've been on. Spring is a busy season around here.

On the poulty front ... 7 new roundheads today!! WOOT!

I have a couple Eastern Wild and one Narraganset hen. One EW tom and one RP tom.

I'm stoked!

DWCP is a good way to go, but you still (IMO) let soaps sit for at least 3 weeks before selling. I use a 32% lye saturation for my milk soaps.

I made all my spring scents in January and am finishing up my summer scents. Depending on what starts selling fast this month, I'll make extras and start on my autumn scents in June.

I have a standard 10 fragrances that I always keeps, then another 5 or so that are seasonal. Once I get down to 20 bars of a soap, I make a new 42 bar batch

I got my two scent orders in today and I got some really good ones!

From Essential oil university
Peppermint eo ( wow, this is so sweet and candy cane like, I like it a lot better than the one from BB)
Rosemary eo
Sweet Orange eo, yummy!
Bitter Almond FO, I love this one, much better than the one I got from Wsp. Still has some cherry in there, but it isn't the main note like the other one. This one smells just like Almond extract. And you can't beat the price, $8.45/pound

Southern Garden Scents
Green Tweed-smells just like the one from Sw, we'll see if it just as strong soaped
Sun Ripe Raspberry-very nice, seet and tart, but not fakey like CG's, no cough syrup smell here.
dragon's blood-this one is hard to describe, not a favorite, but ok.
Chia Tea- OMG, I

this one! I am going to soap this one this weekend. I think this is an all time favorite, I just hope it stays tue because itis awesome.
Sandalwood Yland- A great sensual floral. I hope it soaps nice, great scent.
And I saved 10% with the BYC09 coupon!

I usually do a DW too, but with that rose geranium fo I did for Mother's day, you have to use full water or else it's Soap on a stick, it sets up FAST. My gerneral water usage is 2:1 to 1.5:1 water lye ratio, but I have gone as strong as a 1.25:1 for castile. I also believe that you still have to cure for the regular 4 weeks, even if you discount. The soap just gets better for the waiting.

Hey Insiderart:

I'd love to hear about your cosmetics and of course get some tips on soaping....

Could you whip up a batch and maybe join the next swap???

What books do you have and are you willing to part with them??
