Recently I've been trying to hand feed my hen more often and talk to and pet her while she eats to get her more used to human presence and touch, for both safety and pet reasons. However, she's been running up to me and she seems to expect food from me much more frequently than I'd like, even though I take care to feed her around her regular times. I don't expect her to suddenly become accustomed to touch or stop moving away, so the effect itself is okay, but I don't want her to expect food from me at all times. What am I doing wrong? Should I have other family members hand feed her as well, or feed her only base feed vs. supplemental foods?

Just only feed her when you want. Mixing up the times she gets treats will keep her running to you. Think of it like a slot machine, people still keep pulling the handle, to get a tiny payoff now and then. Keep the treats to 10% or less of her daily intake.

Our chickens were starting to do the same, so I began sitting in the run with them, playing on my phone, and generally ignoring them. They got over their shyness, because chickens are naturally curious, and after a while just can’t stand not checking things out. I can catch and pick up all three now, and a month ago, that never happened. No treats, just quiet familiarity.
