Sorry, but the unit is self contained and would take more than just plugging something in to keep it fully D/C powered with a timer. What is needed is a D/C time delay (I assume you want to add hours of light), which more than likely you have to build a time delay with a 555 IC timer in monostable mode, triggered by a photocell. Then a fairly complex re-wiring of the lamp control circuit. Basically building a new control for the lamp.

The light in the link already has a timer for 5-60 seconds after movement, but this will trigger everytime a chicken moves, so they will be up all night.

One reason for all the failures, is batteries don't like temperature extremes. High/low temperatures also affects charge/discharge effectiveness.
