Sold 3 wk old sexed chicks based on wings?

Do males of all breeds always have the shorter body, more upright stance with fat legs or is it breed by breed? B/c that seems like a dead giveaway with the above pics...

If only it were that easy! Barnevelders are a terrific example of a breed known for sexing challenges and yet here is an obvious one.

You can use 1x3 wire fencing for the run cover. 1/2" hardware cloth is quite expensive and you don't need the holes to be that fine for the predators you listed.

Given I've had mice running across the ceiling (between floors) and they are quite audible, I can only imagine a 15 pound coon running around!!! Glad you have a trapper coming.

Trapper will charge $489!!!!! Now I miss just having mice to deal with!

Good to know about 1x3" for the run top. I read i have to use 1/2" hardware all the way up the sides because animals will climb up and get in if the wire is spaced further farther up the side, is that not true? I was planning on a 6' high run and thought i had to use 1/2" hardware all the way up!

Yeah, I don't think it is that common to be able to easily tell a male at 3 weeks. Maybe the Barnevelder sexing challenge is in the vent sexing?? Cause they sure missed on him! Trill is all girl and lays a roundish brown egg that sometimes hints of a WEE bit of purple.

Lots of times a pullet will be more upright than the other chicks and people fret that it is a cockerel. Or maybe the legs are a BIT thicker. Lots to worry us half to death as the grow! Trouble was just REALLY obvious. But I had to wait until he was 10 weeks to claim my "pullet guarantee" refund from Meyer, per their rules. That should tell you something about how "easy" it is to tell if a juvenile bird is male or female at younger ages.

This are the pictures I sent in

Ouch. But I know you don't want to trap it and send it to its final resting place on your own. Unless your "anti kill" mindset has a $$ limit ;) I know my daughter's doesn't. We have to take spiders outside and she gets mad at her cat when he kills a mouse in the house.

Predators will climb but a coon can only get in a space so small (though apparently smaller than we would think), their danger with regard to "fencing" is in snagging a bird at ground level through the "barrier". Weasels can get in smaller spaces but I THINK are night time dangers, they attack birds sleeping on the roosts so as long as the birds are safely locked in their "Fort Knox" coop at night, no problem with somewhat larger openings out in the run.

I think you would be safe with 1x3 wire fencing on the walls and roof of the run, with 1/2" hardware cloth up 3'. I don't have a run, other than the barn alley. My girls free range outside the barn during the day. And yes I have lost a couple to foxes in late April. I think that might be when they have their babies and maybe there isn't an abundance of natural prey just yet so they dare to come in close.

More pics! Growing like weeks. No red combs yet...I think they're now 4-5 weeks old...Just guessing. I asked for one RIR and one Buff orp but it looks like i got two RIR..the small red ones, can anyone confirm? Any look like boys yet? I'm worried the smallest red one has no tail feathers, and s/he's at least 4 weeks old! Is that normal?

Please excuse my deranged look, I worked a full 9 hr office day, then worked 4 hours painting, then got home at 10pm and decided to play with the chickens, the fumes are getting to me! ;)

Coop is being assembled, time to get them out of the box!

The second picture, the chick on the far right looks suspicious but I wouldn’t put money on it being male yet.

I don’t see anything that looks like the BOs I’ve seen. The more solid colored red chick is probably the RIR. I’m not sure about the other. The ones I had didn’t have any other markings, just solid red.

yeah, that big EE is one I'm worried about, the "comb" or beak area is kinda turning pinkish.....

I have no idea on those red chicks! They look similar but the color is a little different on the wings coming in, I guess it'll be a wait and see on breed! :D

I’m playing the same game now. I think I have five boys and four girls. They all sat out nicely so I could count and compare this afternoon.

I don’t know if you can zoom in, but the chick on the far left reminds me of your big EE, but maybe a few days ahead.
