Solstice Eclipse

DH and I are setting our alarm .. we live in the woods, however, so we'll probably have to drive down the road and find a good view!

I woke up to cloudy skies this morning. I'm hoping it clears by nightfall. This will be my 9-year-old's first eclipse. I think he was about one or two for the last one on a clear night, and we didn't wake him up. I still remember standing out on the street with my older one, and then us all acting as the sun, moon and earth and acting out the parts for the eclipse. The kid got the concept down, we had fun, and he still remembers it.

I looks like people are pretty excited about this. The NASA site is overwhelmed and I can't get on. It is always a cause for excitement in this geeky household.

This is a very sweet school rendition of the sun is born again today. This school did a great very open celebration. The chant is at 9:02

But, sadly they only say it once.

This one song I have not found out there on you tube, but other Anne Hill songs like the Witch's Song (another one my kids just love) is out there.

I cant wait to see it! It'll be my birthday too

. Cant ask for a better gift lol.

I have WHAT in my yard? :

Rather than type one in, I cheated - here is a basic monkey ball bread recipe.

http://bakingbites.com/2009/01/classic-monkey-bread/

This is more or less what I use, I put raisins in each ball and sprinkle some through out the dough to make it more like a giant sticky bun! But, it varies some from year to year.

It is possible to cheat even further and do this by buying canned biscuit dough and quartering the biscuits and rolling them in the dough. I haven't done it, but I have friends who swear by it. I also have one friend who rolls her dough in an instant coffee mix that she also swears by but I don't have the exact recipe. Hmm? maybe its time to ask for that!

I've made something similar that sounds like it would work: Its orange coffeecake bread:
2 cans of cheap biscuits, each biscuit cut in 4 pieces
granulated sugar and orange zest, mixed together
melted butter
powdered sugar and orange juice (for the icing)

Preheat oven to 350 deg. Spray bundt pan with Pam
Roll each piece of biscuit into a ball, dunk in melted butter and roll in sugar/orange zest
Nestle each in bundt pan going around pan to make an even layer
Bake until done (I don't remember how long), about 25 minutes I think.
Let cool just slightly and turn out of pan (this makes the 'pretty' side up
Make an icing to drizzle over coffeecake by mixing a little orange juice with the powdered sugar.
That's it!
Enjoy!

That would work, it does not really matter what recipe you use, its just the family gathering around the bowl and making wishes for people while they place the dough in the pan. To me real dough feels better for a ritual than refrigerated dough, but it really does not matter.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!

I like the idea of making my own dough as well, but I like the sound of the orange coffee cake recipe...sounds really good. I also like the idea of wishing good thought while placing the dough in the pan. I'm going to try this. I was trying to decide what type of bread to have at Yule feast (I usually bake some homemade grain bread), but I think I'll try this instead. Thanks for the recipes !!!

I have a site that has a LOT of chants on it, not just the words, but actual sound files. If you are interested, I'll post the link for you. Probably my favorite chants are "I Am A Witch" "Earth My Body" "Hoof and Horn" and "We All Come From The Goddess", though I have a million other ones that I love. Oh...and my very favorite is "Spider Woman."

Counting down the hours. Getting all the "warm" things ready for nature's theater tonight...Blankets, coats, snow pants, hot chocolate, did I mention blankets? Burrr. I hope you all get to enjoy the sight, and may the clouds stay away!
