Solution to first hatched chick playing"kick ball"with eggs

I tried this method and only 1 of my chicks had an issue getting out of the shell. Poor thing ended up upside down. I later found out that it was the chick that had the issue though, and I had to cull it this morning.

I hope I never have to do that again!

may steal this idea then! (although i have silkie eggs in, so i may have to modify the roll size...

It would be super easy to trim some of the length out and tape it back together. I though about the styrofoam cup thing too, but my chicks are seriously rambunctious and I doubt they would stay put in it for more than 5 minutes. I think I produce athletes in my incubator or something. When I watch them move around they look like drunk men who have just drunken a pot of coffee. Full speed ahead, but have no Idea where they are going.

I made some just today after reading this post! My kitchen is a little off kilter and my eggs would sometimes roll when I tried to turn them. Mine are a little smaller but they do the trick! Thanks for the great idea! Lock down in two days for me!!

I think that might keep a weaker chick from being able to push apart the shell after zipping. I had to help my last two bust out, and I could see that ring working against a chick that had zipped sometimes. I agree the activity in the 'bater seems to stimulate the others. Ever look into a quiet 'bater of zipped eggs and tap on the glass and see them start moving around and hear them start cheeping? Whether or not this helps the hatch, I don't know, but just the basic physics of the ring make me think it could be a issue for a percentage of the eggs.

The Rings Probably arent for everyone or every Chick, but they solve my issue....weather thats even a real issue is debatable too. Thats life I guess

They are pure Cochin, and Cochin x Brahma.

Aubrey-Greens Feed(on North Virginia by the Bonanza) will get their chicks the first week of march. Even if you dont get any, you can stare at the hundreds and hundreds they will have in all the separate pens. We go there just to "look" around. Good for getting your" Chick fix".

6 out of 7 have hatched and there is a pip in #7. Rolls did not work well - too humid and they fell apart. Will try them again but will not cut until I wrap them with duct tape. Last egg has been used for a soccerball and pillow all afternoon - not sure when it pipped. None of them were due until tomorrow. The first one out committed suicide by drowning himself in the water well of the bater. Made a thick pad of cheesecloth sewn together that prevented that from happening again. Will put it in at lockdown from now on. Fingers crossed for a perfect hatch!
