Solution to first hatched chick playing"kick ball"with eggs

I like the toilet paper roll idea! I just cut out my carton but I don't like how the eggs sit in the carton. On the paper roll it can lay sideways like I have them in the bator now. I lost some last hatch that had piping and I swear it was becasue they drowned when the fist chick kicked them upside down. Great idea , thanks for sharing.

Well the "egg cradles" held up all night to the number 1 chicks dancing on them all night! 2 more have pipped. WooHoo!

And here he is this morning, running through the unhatched eggs at top speed and climbing on top of his siblings, but not knocking them over!

Im not pushing my idea on anyone, but so far it works for me. My little homemade bator doesnt really have room for egg crates and I like the fact that they are on their sides. I will update as more action happens....

one of the books i have shows a picture of a woman incubating eggs and she has cut the bottoms off styrofoam cups (i think i saw this on byc too!). they have more room to move around, and they usually dont leave their little area... i thought that was clever but im scared to try it because i have 30 eggs and i dont think there would be enough room in my bator. sounds cool for, like, tenish eggs though!

I have my toilet paper roll cut and ready and also have egg cartons...I am due to go on lockdown tomorrow so please keep us posted on progress. If you use egg cartons, do they go big end down or small end? Air sac is on big end. I have usually laid them on their side (in a Brinsea mini) but have lost some that pipped and got used for a soccer ball. I like the idea of the bands.

may steal this idea then! (although i have silkie eggs in, so i may have to modify the roll size...

It would be super easy to trim some of the length out and tape it back together. I though about the styrofoam cup thing too, but my chicks are seriously rambunctious and I doubt they would stay put in it for more than 5 minutes. I think I produce athletes in my incubator or something. When I watch them move around they look like drunk men who have just drunken a pot of coffee. Full speed ahead, but have no Idea where they are going.
