Some of my neighbors are wondering why...

Thanks for the info. Yes, I discovered that, when trying to order last night. I saw their min as 15. We ended up ordering 4 from Meyer Hatchery in OH. You would recommend 5 or 6? I am concerned about them coming through the mail. I this the reason for loosing a chick or two. The first time I heard you can mail order them, I could hardly believe it.

It is a good thing to order a few extra and I understand your concern about mail order. When the eggs hatch there is about 3 or 4 days that a peep can go without anything to eat or drink. It's usually during this time frame that the peeps are shipped. When you get them give them sugar water to drink. You may have to show them how to drink.Wait awhile be fore you feed them.Chickens have been sent mail order longer than you could imagine.

I'm one state over from Ohio and also ordered from Meyer.

Chicks came thru the mail fine, no issues.

I ordered two extra, figuring as a first timer I'd make some mistakes and lose 1 or 2.

Didn't loose any and now the coop is a bit crowded.

Sure, no problem! 15 is still better than 25, the last time I ordered chicks from MM I ordered the minimum and they sent 36
Being sent through the mail is pretty hard on chicks. Or, sometimes the hatchery sends you a chick that was weak to start with and they just die. The few extra are sort of just extra insurance you get the 4 you wanted in the first place. If picking up chicks at the feed store is an option I wouldn't worry about it too much :)

My Pet Chicken does a 3 chick min order depending on where you live. I had to have mine shipped to a post office in Denver to qualify for the minimum but it was worth it to me to only get the number I wanted. Shipping was expensive though. :/
