Thanks. Its my own fault because I put them into my tank instead of quarantine. I honestly don't know how to do a quarantine tank without fear of it cycling and hurting the fish. I have an extra ten gallon for that reason, but ..... yeah.

I always read about quarantining, but have never done so either . We drip acclimate any new additions to the reef tanks but that is it. Are you just supposed to keep a second, empty but stable tank around for quarantining? I don't get how that works.

It helps to have an extra filter or media to instantly cycle it.

Exactly. Im not certain either. There are different ways to do it. You can use your own tank water or you can keep one constantly going. Keeping one going presents a challenge in that it has a different bacteria load from the tank those fish will be going into. Setting one up on an as needed basis confuses me because of the nitrogen cycle. I have had tanks spontaneously restart their cycle for no apparent reason. Only a couple of times, so Im not sure why Im so afraid to do it. Treating a 10 gal tank is much cheaper and easier than a 55 gal tank. I think I will make it a point to do so from now on. I have also heard of purposely shocking your fish, as in dipping them in salt water if they are fresh water fish, and vice versa. I have never done that because there are several kinds of fish that have zero salt tolerance.

Doesnt it mess with the bio load of the tank its being “stored in” though?

I don’t think it impacts it that much. I haven’t noticed any adverse affects. Then again, most of my tanks have been pretty lightly stocked for a while. I would use tank water, but I’ve read it doesn’t carry enough beneficial bacteria to properly cycle a tank.

Thanks! That really alleviates a lot of my concerns that I just hadn't been able to get a straight answer on.
