Hi all,

I'll try to get a video up as soon as my phone is charged because this behavior is really difficult to describe, but here it goes: my duckling, Mac, is a Muscovy duck and we're not sure how old he is but he's just now getting in some feathers. When we got him, he had something funky with his eye and we had no idea what it was, but he stopped being bothered by it once we got him in the pond and had him swimming regularly (figured he got out whatever was in there).

Today, my roommate says that he made a weird noise and when she went outside to check on him (he had been left in the pond with our mother duck and 6 ducklings. unrelated), and his eyes looked really sunken and goopy and he had a little bit of blood on the side of his mouth. She cleaned him up and got some ointment on his eyes just in case but he has not stopped quietly chirping (almost like a muted chirp. very very quiet), chewing, and just generally moving his mouth and walking around. Literally, his mouth has NOT stopped moving... we thought something was stuck in his mouth but after inspecting him very closely, there's nothing in his mouth or obstructing his throat (unless it's way further down) and no wounds or even any irritation at all.

He's not underweight at all, he's still eating and drinking and swimming, but he walks a little funny, and this is all very sudden.

So again, to describe what he's doing is he's making a lot of very quiet noises and appears to be constantly chewing food, even when there's nothing in his mouth. I'll try and get a video up asap but unless there's a disease or injury that caused this and we just can't see it, I'm concerned that it might be neurological.

Welcome to BYC! Is a vet an option? If not, can you call the UCD CAHFS lab in San Bernardino and ask if they seen duck plague in your area?

Edited to add:
I don't mean to scare you, but several of the symptoms fit.

The vet unfortunately won't be an option until next week... we hit some extremely hard times this month and have had to scrounge for rent. I plan on taking him as soon as I get paid though.

Can I just google the number, or do you have it?

@Miss Lydia it's possible. Mom didn't really care about him too much but he did get bullied by some of the other ducklings. They are call ducks so they're much smaller but he never defended himself so we keep an eye on him and intervene where necessary. I wasn't home when this happened, and usually my roommate is extremely attentive of any babies in our care, so I will ask her if she noticed mom go after him.

Also, I'm sure duck plague (if that is what he has) is contagious, but how contagious is it? Do i need to keep him in a separate room altogether? or is a separate enclosure okay? Right now he's in a large bucket with some towels. Being in a "nest" seemed to calm him down a little...

Hurry up and get that video loaded to YouTube or Vimeo, then copy/paste the link here.

Would also be helpful to see a picture of his poop because I think they have funny looking poop if they have the plague.

His poop thankfully looks completely normal. There's no blood or diarrhea.
Okay, good, then probably no plague. Sorry if I worried you. I just panicked because you mentioned eye, blood in mouth, neurological, and I read that Muscovies are more susceptible than other ducks.
