I saw my female button quail eating what looked like a soft egg shell. I was able to take it away from her but she swallowed a long strip. 20 mins later I can’t get her to stand or keep her eyes open I don’t know what to do. She was panting and her head kept swirling to the side. She’s not doing that now but she still won’t look at me.

Am I correct in understanding you've identified the substance she ate as egg membrane? You actually have the membrane so you can positively identify what she swallowed?

The problem is, if you are incorrect about it being egg membrane, it could be something else entirely. From her behavior immediately following swallowing this substance, it may have been toxic. Egg membrane isn't toxic.

If you are not sure about what the substance is, you would be wise to treat for toxic substance ingestion. That would be to use molasses to flush out the intestines to reduce the amount of absorption into her system and hopefully save her.

Molasses flush is one-fouth cup warm water with one teaspoon molasses. The bird should drink as much as you can get her to. The molasses will stimulate the intestines to produce diarrhea and flush the substance through her system quickly.

Thank you this is really useful information. But yes I did identify it as an egg membrane because I was able to take it from her and look it over. Luckily after holding her for a while she began acting normal again and seems to be doing fine. I’m still not sure what happened and this is the 3rd time I’ve had to experience a life & death situation with her I really wish she wouldn’t try to eat weird things 😩
