Oh! one more question...This little cord thing, that is absolutely stuck to the egg shell..
can I cut it? It's stuck to the paper towel, and the cord leads to his tummy, and everytime

he moves, it pulls alot on the tad bit of yolk thats left...Can I cut it off with scissors?

Don't cut it off until it is completely dried out. If it isn't, cut the paper towel that is stuck to it so there is no pulling. Try not to mess with the chick unless it is absolutely necessary.

Ok, I took the giant peice of eggshell off with ease. I got the eggshell off the papertowel.

That "cord" is the blood supply from the inner membrane. When the chick begins to hatch, it also begins to draw in the yolk and the blood supply. The physical activity of zipping stimulates these responses, which is why it's so important to avoid "helping" whenever possible. It can take a full day for a chick to absorb the yolk and blood supply and zip completely. Anytime before that, the chick is "preemie" even though it has pipped. And just like a preemie baby, it fatigues more easily and just generally has less energy than a full term chick. If it pulls through (and it's looking like it very well could in the photo), this will change. In a day or so it'll be bouncing around the brooder making you wonder why you ever doubted it.

Today I don't see any yolk...and hes a spaz.

He's still laying in

the egg carton, but when I turned the light on, he's trying to stand!

He's supporting his head, and able to stand on his 'elbows'.

He's just a little wobbly. That peice of egg is still stuck to him.

theres no way he can cut himself is there? On the egg shell?

When is it safe to put him in the brooder? Once he can walk?

I'm never helping a chick out of a shell again. I've always heard what

can happen, and I've helped them before, but this just ended

helping them period. I felt like falling over and dying last night. It

was horrible, and I couldn't sleep. Thanks for all the help. Even though

he's most likely not totally out of the woods yet. Hes doing better

I am glad he seems to be doing a little better. How long has it been since he hatched? I would be getting concerned if it has been over 24hours since he hatched and he is still not able to stand alone yet but there is really nothing else you can do for him now accept wait and see if he has the strenght to survive. I wish him luck.

He hatched at 10 PM last night. He can stand now, but not move around.

He's getting better at suppoting his head, and still sleeps alot. I guess we'll

see how it turns out...But it hasn' t been 24 hours <Yet> . Hes getting there.

His tummy is still looking weird. Theres like a little scab there. Is that ok?

What is the scab? Theres eggshell stuck to the scab and I wouldn't dare to

pull it off. The cords are now totally dry, and also stuck to the scab....Is that

normal? When ever he gets strong enough to go in the brooder, we are going to

give him some electrolytes. That will help him, won't it? Thanks for the help.
