Soooo Mad! Silkie roo got killed!

I understand how mad you are. I have had the same thing done. A roo will kill another roo even if it is a silkie roo.

I was big into partridge not so much now as I use to be but I had two roo's I was watching grow out I was running out of room and put the roo's in cages side by side. By the next morning I went out to feed as I always do and found both roo's bloody from fighting and one is worse shape then the other. Needless to say the one in worse condition died. Which was the better of the two and the one I planned on keeping. I felt my blood boil and I wanted to BOIL HIM. He was rehomed the next day I could not stand the sight of him. Since I have not been big into partridge silkies.

Get rid of him. Do you really want a vicious killer passing on those genes to your chicks.? Check out the BYC auctions - people are always offering roos and many are beautiful examples of their breed for little or very reasonable prices. Get one that deserves to be a head roo.

Ohh that's a great idea, hatch some out from him, I can't imagine a rooster killing another, mine are good together, one is the boss and the others respect that and I wouldn't breed that mean one either, don't be passing those genes on

As someone else suggested, collect all your hens' eggs ASAP and put them in an incubator. They will still have your old roo's genes. Maybe you can hatch out another roo.

Hard to believe a puff ball could have such pent up distruction dwelling within him. Oh well, I guess I learn something new every day. I've got 11 of the little puff balls that just hatched a week ago. I will have to keep an eye out for aggression I suppose.

Just getting online.... Soo sorry to see this Montana! He was gorgeous. I hate to say it but it is nature... They were males after all, barely 10 months old, and full of testosterone at that stage. They had girls in there to fight over and apparently the 2nd rooster wanted some of his own. It doesn't matter what breed you have, each bird has their own personality. The very passive males are usually poor breeders in comparison to their more aggressive counterparts. Its why I've always stressed the importance of keeping back-ups. Might be easy for some people just to say to replace that boy.... Finding a clear jet black cock/cockerel with good body type is almost like a needle in a haystack though. Is it possible to trace down some of the people you sold some of their brothers to and buy one back? I know I still have the parents to these birds, but really haven't kept back much for young stock. Probably won't have a comparable male for sale anytime soon. I also have your name on a waiting list for chicks too, but its pretty far down yet.

I know they were raised together.... Sometimes if you leave them together, they might get along. Even if you pulled both roosters out into a bachelor pen, they still might get along. They were fighting for dominance and breeding rights over those hens. A small enclosure, no where for that first boy to get away, only a few hens to claim, and a dominant male that has alot of pent up energy from being all alone..... Its nature! Ever watch 2 stallions fighting over a herd of mares? Those battles will get bloody as well too. The less dominant (and weaker) stallion either gets run off or killed. Heck I've even seen a few human teenage boys get into fights over the same girl.
