Sooooo got my 2nd egg now for some ??

Nope. I did try place my layer and new squatter in the boxes this afternoon. No eggs today

They'll often be sporadic when they first start laying and may skip days at a time.

I know not everyone has the time to do this but the best time to train new layers in a nest box is right when they're looking to lay. IF they lay on schedule it'll roughly be 26, 27 hours after they first laid (so if I guesstimate she laid around 10 AM Monday, I would check in at noon on Tuesday). They'll usually be a bit noisy or fussy and wandering around trying to decide on a spot, and that's when I grab them and put them in a box. I block up the entrance for a little bit, like 30 seconds or so, until I see them starting to explore the box, and they seem to stay put after that. So far I've gotten 3 of 3 new layers to use the nest box after doing that.

I agree that color of the fake eggs shouldn't matter. I don't know why but my crazy pullets rolled the lighter colored fake egg out of the nest box but they leave the darker fake eggs in the nest boxes. Not just out of the nest box - entirely out of the coop. So I removed the lighter one. My top pullet is taking a hiatus from laying right now but she still runs in the coop daily to check that her fake eggs are still OK. She'll go in the nest box, roll it around, tuck it a bit, then leave. Go figure.
