SOS VENT PROLAPSE

Wyorp, even if you were Wellington himself in a previous life (or some other famous general), remember, this is the current life. :lau:thumbsup

In other words, your tone, bro. :lau (Can't believe I said 'bro'. :lau) But there is a whiff of... (sniffing)... drillsergeant I think it's called...

I don't have any pictures. I wasn't thinking of taking pictures, I was too busy trying to save her life and cutting a path through all the debris and detritus clogging up the good info on the internet.

Well Bless your heart :hugs It sounds like you had a rough time of it.

I'm glad you were able to find a process that worked for you.
Shame that's there's no photos, but no worries, you can still still write up an article with the details. One more piece of information on the net surely won't hurt;)

While Calcium plays a role in making hard shells, the purpose for extra/quickly absorbed calcium supplement given to a hen with a prolapse if for oviduct contractions and retention.

I have been giving Tums for this reason! I just meant my comment as I don't think the prolapse was cause by a calcium deficiency because her eggs have been perfect. It will stay in when it's placed in, but she pushes it back out. That's the main problem.

We put her down today. It just was not getting better. A terrible feeling. We've lost 4 within this year. Upset doesn't cover it.

I'm very sorry for your loss:hugs

Would you consider sending the body to your state lab for necrospy or if you think you could do it, perform your own informal examination. Even though this was a prolapse, there you may find that there was something that contributed to that and made it harder to correct.

You mention that you have lost 4 within the year, were they all having similar problems with production or do you know?

I thought of doing a necrospy, but decided against it. I do believe there was an underlying issue, maybe some deformity inside after initial prolapse. She kepy pushing it out, it would stay in when placed. She was straining for some reason. She acted normal, my husband almost chose not to put her down but she pushed again and it was obvious she was losing quality of life.
No, I lost one to a hawk, one to an injured leg (I believe it was dislocated and just wouldn't go back even doing "chicken rehab" for a month). The other was an old rooster given to us who was super cool. He passed in his sleep. And then this sweet young girl.

Oh, this is so sad to read... Why? Why did it have to end like that? You left so many clues that you truly care , Look at your first post:
'It breaks my heart seeing this.'
We all feel like that because they sustain this injury in the process of 'doing their duty' to us and laying their eggs.

In your second post:
'The poor thing is the sweetest.'

I really tried to reach you. My hen was worse than yours. She recovered. What more could I have done? Writing a wall of text? I'm sorry, I just couldn't do that. That's called pathological altruism and it's not right. We all have boundaries, and they are a healthy thing. But just a word from you would've transformed the pathological altruism into normal interaction between people who have compassion for animals .

To answer your question, they strain because the cloaca can't expel stool normally, so they get backed up, they feel the normal urge to poop and they try to do what usually gives relief, only now it's not working. And just the feeling of uncomfortableness will make them strain, to obtain relief.

The pain that you express in the last posts is absolutely genuine and I am so very sorry that this happened.

Hi there! I'd encourage you to work on empathy and broadening your philosophical research to encompass areas such as understanding all angles a person may be seeing and ultimately getting to a point to where you are not thinking of yourself as so much better than anyone else- you have no idea of anything within my life, my schedule, and most importantly, as this website is dedicated to chickens, you know nothing about my chicken. You have a picture and a post to go off of, not the 16+ hours spent trying to help her nor the personal experience we had nor the million other factors that were considered.

Thanks for saying you are sorry this happened, I am too. But I am not interested in hashing out who is better at making decisions nor am I interested in defending myself any further, as nobody should have to.
