Sour Crop resulting from Egg Yolk Peritonitis?

The antibiotics you have are more for respiratory ailments, I don't think they will help enough. You need a deep tissue type medication like Amoxicillin or even Doxycycline. You can use the human medication as well.

Thank you so much. I got up to the feed store and read your message about the acidified only copper sulfate and wouldn't you know they only had the Crystal Blue brand and tried hard to sell me on it. The lady swore to me up and down she puts it in her chickens water and so does everyone else locally cause you can't find the acidified. I just told her no thank you. I'll order both products tonight.

Should I do anything different for her In the meantime until the products are delivered? We do have a heat lamp I can get on her, no infrared tho. She doesn't appear cold or too lethargic today.

Fabulous you turned down the Blue Crystal! It's just not worth the risk, nasty additives can be put in plain Copper Sulfate. If its Acidified, you know its animal safe, they dont add Acidity to industrial applications.

For now you might use any vaginal cream you have, 1ml twice daily under the tongue. Feed her plain yogurt, 1 tablespoon 2 times a day. You might also put Apple Cider Vinegar in her water, in the entire flocks water if she is mixed with the others. 1 Tablespoon AVC per gallon of water. If you feel up to it, my spice mix of Ginger, Chili powder and Cinnamon and Lemon juice, 1/8 teaspoon on the spices mixed with 1 Tablespoon of Lemon juice given orally once a day won't hurt either. If she doesn't seem cold and she's not too thin, you can skip the heat lamp.

Also, the "Acidified" ingredient is absorbic acid. It makes the stuff palatable, without it, Copper Sulfate is incredibly bitter. Even then, I still add ACV to the Copper Sulfate to hide the taste.

Trust me, it wasn't hard turning down that Blue Crystal. After the lady put a huge jug in my hands I started the read the back and the big warning about wearing PPE and hazard labels all over it was enough! Our girls deserve better than that LOL

I am still concerned about starting the yeast cream before the Amoxicillin comes in. Would I need to wait a few days after that to begin with the Amoxicillin? Maybe I will just continue to use your concoction of lemon juice and spices in the meantime. I will also give apples, some yogurt, and put some ACV in the flocks water since she is in genpop right now.
She is definitely not too skinny right now. I think I caught this pretty early.

You have really helped me get a grip on how to proceed and I feel a lot more confident in her possible outcomes. I can't thank you enough!

I would definitely get the yeast under control before starting antibiotics. Antibiotics make yeasts bloom and flourish making a yeast infection worse. So you definitely do not want to jump on the antibiotics first because her yeast infection will become a doughy monster. When I have a really sick bird and I know they have several things going on, I give everything at once if meds can be mixed. In this situation, Copper Sulfate can be mixed with antibiotics, wormers and even Corid. And if you would rather offer each one up separately, you need to start with the Copper first to tame the yeast down. Once the yeast has backed off, you can begin the antibiotics. But it's up to you if you want to put the entire mix of meds together and treat her all at once. Vets will give both yeast meds and antibiotics to birds with both bacterial and yeast infections.

Follow the directions on the Antibiotics label for mixing. As for the Copper Sulfate, it is mixed 1/4 teaspoon Copper to one gallon of water. A new batch is made daily if the entire gallon is used daily. If I am treating only one bird, I get a one gallon plastic water jug and add 1/4 teaspoon of Copper, 1 Tablespoon of ACV to 1 gallon of water. (Antibiotics are added separately each day). Shake well before each use, this gallon will last several days giving a fresh batch in a quart waterer daily. Copper Sulfate is used for 7 to 10 days. Probiotics must be used for several days after treatment as not only will the antibiotics kill off all good bacteria, but the Copper will strip out all the good digestive yeasts as well from beak to vent.

All excellent knowledge. Yeast cream, it is!

I thought miconazole and clotrimazole were antibiotics also which led me to believe they could cause negative interactions with amoxicillin but google tells me they are an antifungals. The more you know!

I have already ordered with Twin Cities the Amoxicillin and Copper Sulfate. I have added ACV in my flocks water already. I will begin her yeast cream treatment today!

I just wanted to leave an update. The miconazole has helped her tremendously! She woke up today with an empty crop! Last night and this morning she did not have any excess liquid in her crop, and it felt empty this morning. She isn't a fan of eating the miconazole, I can't say I blame her lol Her urates are still a little yellow and she goes to bed a little earlier than everyone else, but she is not lethargic. She comes out in the morning with everyone else and eats breakfast. She has been drinking water with ACV in it.

I should be getting her amoxicillin and copper sulfate in the mail today and will put her in the run away from everyone else so she can drink her water with those in it. She is slowly starting to turn around pending clearance of any internal digestive issues. I am impressed with how fast the crop cleared up. She doesn't have that rank smell about her anymore.

To reiterate instructions, I will make a 1 gallon batch of copper sulfate and ACV and use that daily in a quart waterer, adding amoxicillin separately in the same quart waterer every day. Please tell me if I read those instructions wrong!

Great to hear the miconazole is working! Very happy she is feeling better. You could always put the meds on your finger and scrape it into her beak. I use an empty syringe, they are always good to have on hand to force meds on sick birds. However if she eats foods with it in there, that's perfect too! As for the Miconazole, the other creams never worked well on my birds yeast infections. To prevent the yeast from becoming immune to this med, keep using it until you get the Copper. Yeasts are very stubborn and will eventually get immune to the miconazole as well, but you can use it several more times before yeast immunity takes over. Fortunately yeast never become immune to Copper.

Sounds like a good plan, you've got the instructions down, keep us posted along the way! :)

Another update for my dear Violet:

Today is her last day in solitary confinement! In the pic below she is the one front and center. The cream colored easter egger. I would let her out about an hour before bedtime to be with her sisters. It was hard getting her alone for a pic because everyone else was super curious LOL

She has been doing much much better. No more sour crop. Her poops are still green and runny but not very yellow like before. I assume it is still runny because all of the good bacteria has been stripped from her body. She has lost a little bit of weight but I don't think it was too much. She ate and drank her medicated water the entire course of treatment. I will start her on probios this evening.

I can't thank you enough, @TwoCrows and @Wyorp Rock, both of you gave great advice and I am positive she is going to survive this debacle. You guys rock!

I just love success endings! I am so happy for you and her, I'm glad she is doing so much better! Definitely get her on some probiotics of some kind, either daily yogurt (about a tablespoon) or any kind of animal or human probiotics. Hopefully the poop returns to normal, sometimes all these symptoms are secondary to something else going, time will tell.

She looks great! 💖 Thanks for the update!! :) And keep us posted in the future!
