Sour crop

Seven days.
Hi there, I have a little chook who l'm treating for impacted and sour crop starting yesterday. Just withholding food, giving oil and water and doing regular massage. She also has diahorrea. Am I still OK to keep treating her myself? When do I need to take her to vet if at all? Thanks :)

Go back to page 1. Read post #2. It's easier than repeating here all of the advice that has been given in this thread. It's excellent advice!

How long do you suggest keeping her off the regular feeds. I let her sleep in the coop with the rest for protection at night but in the morning she goes into an area where she can’t get to the regular feed and I can monitor what she eats.

I personally never prevented Roopecca from eating normal feed. I made sure he got his medicine before he ate in the morning and again 9-12 hours later, depending on daylight availability.
Let's ask @azygous

She laid an egg for the first time this morning! I’m hoping that this is a good sign! I’ve been pulling her out of the coop in the morning and giving her her meds and sticking her in an isolation area where she has shelter water and eggs or yogurt. Then when all the hens go back into the coop at night I give her her meds again and stick her in the coop so she is safe.

I read your great article and I'm sure my hen has a sour crop.

I didn't want to start a new post so i thought I'd ask here.
I found the Miconazole suppositories at the store, but they have two different strengths .... the 3 day pack/box that has 3 prefilled applicators of 4% Miconazole.... then they have the 7 day pack/box that has 7 prefilled applicators of 2% Miconazole.

Which strength should I use?

You can use either strength. You can use the suppositories and cut them into quarter-inch lengths, but you will not be using the applicator. The tiny chunk will be popped directly into the beak like a gum drop into a child's mouth.

If you look a little more carefully at the shelf where they sell it, you may see they also have a tube of miconazole 2% seven day cream. I find that more economical and it's just as easy to use. Some chickens like the taste and will eat it off your finger.
