Sour crop

no, he emptied her crop thou so he saw what came out. shes still on nystatin and metronidozole. but i dont think the crops sour at the moment. just seems to come back again and again!

bombies crop still didnt empty over night and she had runny poop this morning her crop felt so solid i had to try to empty it. it was really hard to do and when finally i managed it this really think gloop came out. i mean really thick. i did it over the toilet and it splashed when it hit the water! i got as much out as i could. could this be because ive been feeding her oats? i ask because thats never been like that before. or maybe it was the meds she had yesterday? i just dont know what to do anymore. im wondering if i can ever get her better :( shes still fighting so i dont want to give up but how do you tell if their suffering? she dosnt seem to be but i dont know. shes back to vets on monday but i dont know what more he can do. if he wants to opperate i think ill let him, maybe he can fix something or at least figure out whats wrong so we know what we are dealing with. im considering the wine thing but unsure about starving her so long cos shes so thin. also not sure if it will help even if it clears the crop . if her crops not working this will just happen again. what would you feed her? she wont touch the pellets unless their mashed.

ok shes ate a few pellets but not much. as i said going vets monday but will now try anything. does anyone think i should try the wine thing? or baking soda? over weekend. surgery may be only option monday.want to have exhausted all options by then. i can still feel bits of grit/twig in there so maybe surgery is best anyway .

well bombie has been back outside today and finally after the other hens pecking her a bit they seem to have settled. shes spending her first night outside in a month. she was desperate to get out of that cage! any way crop seems smaller tonight despite her picking up bits of twig, mud, god knows what, off the run floor all day today! shes eating pellets, i think cos the others are, so thats a good enough reason to put her back out. she seems happier and pooping is solid again. who knows what the morning will bring?!
i realise i may be getting boring with my constant posts about bombie but it helps me to write it down, been so emotional! and shes up and down on a daily basis! i believe i have become obsessed! i think of nothing else! lol

I just read all your problems with your chicken. Walked outside today to my coop and my 9 month old Easter Egg chicken is listless and every time she puts her head down, she raises it back up like she's swallowing water. My cousin has chickens so she had me check the crop. It too was squishy and when I touched it, clear, but kinda snotty looking water came from her mouth. She is drinking water but is having problems eating...won't even eat her "wormies" (dried meal worm treats). I hope I don't go through what you've been going through. I have 7 other chickens and they are all perfectly fine. I went to the feed/grain store to talk to the owner since he has many chickens and other birds. I'm a newbie at this, only had them the 9 months. He said to give her tetracycline hyrochloride in her water. I read the warning and it said not to give to it to chickens who are producing eggs! So how long do we not get eggs? He said to give it to all the chickens just in case.....it's dead of winter and yet I'm getting 4 to 8 eggs a day from the girls. I want "Marshmallow"to get better so I'll do whatever is necessary. Oh, the watery stuff didn't seem to smell....she does eat a lot of grass when she's wandering in the yard. I"ll wait for comments before i give them all the antibiotics. Going to check on her now. Hope your chicken gets better soon and is cured for good!

hi, im no expert myself im afraid but looked up your meds on a vet site and this is what they say:
Hi there, this is Dr. Elaine

Tetracycline does not have an established withdrawal period for EGGS, but is 4 days for the meat.

Duramycin has a withdrawal period of 18 days for egg consumption.

For either product, the cooked eggs could be fed back to the chickens before any withdrawal period is over. The decision to eat the eggs when birds have been on tetracycline is yours to make. Residue is going to be very low, but the FDA doesn't have data reflecting when (or if) the tetracycline ever clears the hen's system enough to not show metabolites in the eggs.

Additionally, for either product above, you MUST read the package of the particular product you used, as each can be slightly different, depending on the formulation.

Kindly,

Dr. Elaine

what do you mean by withdrawl period and if we only give it to them for 3 days will they have consumed enough . I have given them 1 tablespoon in 1 gallon of water they are on second course now

Accepted Answer

Withdrawal period is the length of time necessary for drug metabolites to clear either meat or eggs or milk (depending on the animal) from the time the last dose was administered.

This means if a withdrawal period for eggs is 3 days, then chickens that received a dose of antibiotics on a Monday at 5pm should not have eggs collected for human consumption until after Thursday at 5pm (AFTER a full 72 hours has elapsed).

hope this answers your question x
I too hope you dont go through what im experiencing, i will say when this first happened she wouldnt eat and it was when i tempted her with porridge she leaned down to eat and fluid came out of her mouth, it DID smell, smelt yeasty and very strong, the smell filled the room. the fluid was greyish in colour. so maybe its good that yours is clear, can you feel any solid mass in the crop or is it all liquidy? as could be a small blockage(grass build up or something) id try massaging the crop a few times a day as this has helped bombie to digest several times. keep a close eye as in my experience you need to get on top of the problem asap, bombie now has a very streched crop ,and that is hard to deal with.i have used canesten peseries to cure sour crop , from the chemist. not sure if your in the uk , they have a different name in america, but i cut 1 tab in 3 pieces and gave one piece morning and one evening for 4 days. i crushed them and mixed with a little water then syringed it into the corner of her mouth. not sure sour crop is what your dealing with thou, hope someone else chimes in with insight xx

bombies crop was empty this morning! hasnt been empty in so long! shes back with the flock, spent the night with them and although they keep giving her pecks here and there they dont seem aggresive as such. so hopefully they will kind to her v soon. she does look a bit pathetic :( moving slowly(not sure if its a submissive thing or shes just weak) her comb is still shrivelled and dull in colour and i havnt seen her eat today yet. hope the others let her eat! ill be keeping a close eye on her. think it just shows more obviously how ill she is when shes next to the others cos their combs are so big and bright and they are heavy and powerful compared to her now slight frame and slow movements. i need to see improvement in the comb and feel weight going on, then ill know shes on the mend x

Debh: hows marshmallow doing today? why did the guy at the store say to give them all antibiotics and not just the sick one? did he say he thought he knew what it could be? something the others could get too? my other two are fine, i only treated the sick one, i drip the antibiotic into the corner of her beak with a syringe.

I'm glad to hear Bombie is doing better today. Marshmellow is still up in her nesting box, it's below freezing here (Northern California has been in a cold snap for over a week) so I think she and a few other chickens are "staying in bed" while longer. But, after reading your post along with everyone else's, I held off on the antibiotics yesterday. I followed what you did, I tipped her upside down and before I even touched her crop, water started pouring out of her mouth....a lot of it. Then I squished her crop and lots more came out but this time it was greenish brown tinted and a little slimy. There was nothing hard in her crop, just mooshy. After I did that it seemed to help her, she started eating, picking at worms I dug up for them and running after the rest of the girls. I had run out of oyster shells which they absolutely love so after I cleaned their coop I put a decent amount in there for them. She pushed in and ate up. By evening she seemed a lot better. I don't expect her to be fine today, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that maybe she had some grass in her crop and by me massaging it, it dislodged. I'll keep you posted about her progress! I am so glad I read your posts, I've learned so much!! And I'm glad I didn't give all of them the antibiotics yet. As in my children, I don't like to give antibiotics to them unless they really need it. I'm hoping Marshmellow can recover on her own. Again thank you!!
