Kimberly...Not being nosey but wondering what happened to the babies that did not make it?? I am trying to learn what I need to watch for!! She did not have them in her "mini barn" and they are out in open in a small fenced area up walking around when I was out there but I am worried about cold tonight?? as far as not getting enough to eat I would think that would be obvious and take a few days to see...I will bottle feed if I feel one or both need it but hope if that happens I can just supplement mom and they still nurse some also!

Poor nanny!

We have had 8 goats born the past 4-5 days, and only 4 survivors I think. DH will not let us bottle feed any this year. He wants to let the strongest survive. Of course I miss my bottle fed girl...She just disappeared over night over the summer......I had left her out and not put her up... she would not leave our yard...she was scared of other goats....when scared she would hide behind people if they were around! ... we did find her collar but never her. I even walked over 8 acres of land and over a mile up and down our road calling her. She always answered me when I called! NOTHING. Since she was a bottle baby, she loved people. I am hoping the man a couple of miles from us with goats got her ....maybe someone found her and took her to him. I have not seen her there though. No one answered my lost goat ad either.

I have no clue. DH says we have lost 3 not 4. And two of those three were born dead. Fully formed. Just dead. Not sure if it because the mother did not clean them or what.

The one that died the mother would not let it nurse. She butted it away and would bite it. DH put the mom in the stand thingy where he trims hooves & milks when needed. Made the mom stand there while the little one ate. She let her eat several times that first day - we watched to be sure. The kid was walking & baa-ing and sucking fine. The mom just would not take care of it.

Usually this time of year it is sooo cold (ok it was last year) we put the moms and kids in the stables with heat lamps. Not had to do that this year.

FIL says goats are probably like any other animal and instinctively know which ones are strongest. If the mom thinks she cannot take care of but one - she will let the weaker one of the two die.

Usually when I end up bottle feeding it is because of a doe having triplets

There are tricks to getting another doe to take a kid that is not hers. We are still having some birthing...but the brother kid to one that died is nursing on another goat and she is letting him! So he is getting a double dose!

Hardest thing I have found is getting a nipple baby (one that has sucked from mom for more than a day) to take a bottle.

ETA: IDK about all the time...but most of the time for us, one or two day old kids die within 12-24 hours. It happens fast when the mother does not feed them. Even getting that first colostrum and a few feedings in the kid did not help this time ... the mother refused it after we left her.

We have 2 baby goats!!! One white with brown or black ears and one black that I see a white spot on its tiny head!! To dark for pics and I have not entered fence! Pics will come asap...I have been down all night and they are still not in her run in shed but both are standing and she is sticking close. She is skiddish so I am waiting on sunrise to go in just in case she tries to kick my butt! I have not seen them nursing but she has them against her so I am sure they are...my white baby seems wobbly still and the black one seems stronger but that may be normal. It is cold so that is my big concern now...just a couple hours until it starts warming up though

and I can get a better look...I plan on bribing her with sweet feed!!

ETA: I have been down all night means I have set my alarm and peeked every 1 and 1/2 hours!!
