Ok thx id love to try it again I love hatching even if I do suck when I do get a chick to hatch it so cool.
Ok now that I no don't touch after 18 day anyone got some eggs????? Maybe I won't kill the next batch

Someone once told me to candle on day 21 if there dead ones take them out and lidityeave the good ones. Also I can't get my humidity up very high. 60% if I'm lucky I have a used hova bator I tryed plugging both holes only one hole and also tryed a extra bowl of water in there. Today is day 22. Should I just put them in there on day 18 and leave alone till day 25 just in case? I have thought humidity was a problem but not sure how to get it higher
I have a cabinet incubator here that I am working with. Humidity is the hardest thing to get right when hatching and it is better to be a little low than a little high. Do you hatch with your eggs in trays? I always leave my eggs in the plastic egg tray they go through the whole process in and some times I do candle on day 20 if I haven't had a chance to put them in the hatcher before. There is no problem with them getting confused -- I just set the tray in the hatcher box and run the candler over them and take out any clear eggs. If I mess any up it is from opening the incubator to help out a chick but my cabinet incubator get the heat and humidity back up fast so only if I am hatching guineas do I really have a problem. The Marans I am hatching right now seem to like a little higher end of the humidity scale--or a least that seems to be working right now.

I reckon it's time to speak up and stop lurking. Been watching the antics on this thread for a few weeks and already feel as if I know some of you.
'Bout me: until just a few months ago there wasn't a feather on the place other than what the songbirds drop. A friend had some Pekin drakes that needed a new home so they ended up here, and got names right away. Nana won't allow a critter without a name to stay. Welcome Amos and Andy. Not being fully prepared for folks that need protection, we didn't have a fence to keep predators out, we lost poor Amos to a marauding dog within a few days. A fence, then a quick search on Craigslist for a companion for Andy. Couldn't find any Pekins locally, but did find some Muscovy's, so off to Inman to pick up a pair. While there Nana saw a couple of Brown Chinese geese, we strongly suspect both are ganders, but they came home with us, too. Welcome Fred and Ethel, and Clyde and Walter. Aunt Jo, just up the road, had a brainstorm about raising some chickens a while back. Once my yard was full of web footed folks her chickens decided they like the atmosphere down here and started hanging around. A LOT! Wasn't long til dear Aunt Jo offered her entire flock to me, since they like it so much down here. My Introduction to Chicken Math 101. Welcome to Lucy, Buffy, The Pointer Sisters ( Anita, Ruth, June, and Bonnie), Ricky, and The Colonel.
I appreciate the eggs, and being a gardener, the fertilizer is welcome, too.
So far all these feathered folks seem to be healthy, and it seems that if the need for some advice to keep them that way arises, this is the place.

Welcome Cornbread Fred! I like the name!

We got up and took some pics this morning! Hopefully they will turn out....
Yes, my chicks are in a big black planting tub. I have been raising chicks in them now for about 3 or 4 years out in our heated/cooled shed.

And yes, they are bedded on old towels with lots of chick feed on their floor.
Below is one of my blue Copper Marans sleeping among the Dominique chicks.

Yes, there are Red Dorkings in there too! And a black Copper Marans or too.

I didn't mention last night that another problem people could be having is not enough evaporation in the eggs air cell before a hatch. If the air cell does not evaporate enough the chick will not have enough room to move around and get out. I saw the in a couple of my Marans this time and had the same problem last year. I keep my humidity down to around 40 percent during incubation but still have some eggs like the Marans as they develop big chicks and they just seem to have more problems with that.

The first hatch of the season though is the most fun! But I admit, seeing a chick coming out of a shell never gets old!
