South Carolina

I know Rock Hill is quite a far drive away from where we are. I went to Aiken last week, and it was 42 miles one way. We are just out in the boonies out here, and Lake Murrray is a big puddle to drive around for us to visit the other areas on the east side. We pretty much stay here on the west side of Columbia. Our towns are Saluda, Batesburg-Leesville, Newberry. DH commutes to G'wood daily for his job, so he doesn't even care to drive there on the weekends.

I moved here to SC back in 08' from Kansas City MO.

Hi SC friends

I was hoping to get some advice from y'all about the floor of my coop. I have a swingset converted into a coop that sits on regular suburban backyard ground. With my first flock, I started with dirt and it was just hard and compacted and got smelly quickly so I ended up putting down pine shavings. This worked well for about a month and I intended to use a deep litter process but the chicks all turned out to be boys and we had to pass them along to a better home. Before I get the coop all cleaned out and ready for a new flock I am wondering if you have experience with sand on the floor? I've heard that it can be cooler for the chickens in our hot SC summers and that it's also easier to clean.

I would love to hear your different opinions and experiences.

We use sand in all our coops. I keep fresh sand around the feeders about every other day.

Where is the best place to get that much sand? I've been thinking about using sand too. Just cleared the land for the new coop!
We have a local quarry here in Jasper Co. that we can get it from. I do not know if or where there are more in the state. Small amounts of sand can be purchased of course at building supply stores. Hopefully others will give ideas on locations.
