South Carolina

Hey all, I'm looking to get a couple chickens and came across this site. I have a few questions about breeds and figured this would be the best place to ask since I live in SC (outside of greenville).

What I'm looking for is a bantam breed for egg production. I understand they'll be smaller eggs and won't be as productive as a regular egg laying breed. As long as I get around 4 eggs per bird a week I'll be happy. The reason I want bantams is I live is a mostly residental neighboorhood and don't want to have any neighbors complain about a few chickens. I figure 2-3 bantam hens will pretty much go un-noticed.

In the little research I've done so far it looks like bantam minorca and dutch would be good choices for better egg production, but I haven't really found any sources to buy them from in SC. So I was hoping for a few ideas on breeds that are available in the upstate that might fit my needs. I should have the coop and meal worm farm up and running by march-april so I was hoping to have my choices narrowed down to a few breeds by spring so I can hit some shows or swap meets and buy what's available.

Thanks for any input.

You can have 4 hens in the city of coumbia. Ck with other on this site that live in the same area.

Bantam polish are also reasonably good egg layers, and are also quite whimsical ;) there are also bantam leghorns that lay well, and bantam Easter eggers if you want colore d eggs.

WilSC- is your coop/run covered? Just thinking it might make for unhappy neighbors if your birds can fly well

My plan is to semi-free range them. I have about 1/3 acre fenced in back yard and I already read how to clip thier wings which should prevent them from flying over it. In addition I'll keep them spoiled with meal worms, table scraps and other treats to hopefully give them no reason to want to fly out of the yard.

The coop will have a small run that I can close them in if nessicary if a storm is coming or something but for the most part they'll have the yard to run around in. One of my neighbors has a herd of about 15 goats 100 yards away so I'm not too concerned. I live outside city limits but on the edge of a neighboorhood. I just think it may not be 100% kosher for me to have chickens since I beleive you're supposed to have 3+ acres to raise any kind of polutry. But as long as I keep it small and contain them I don't think I'll have any issues.

Just a note about clipped wings: it rarely stops my bantams. It works with larger birds, but the small, lightweight bantams easily learn to adapt to it. Mine still roost in trees even with their wings clipped.
