Well...I tried for a Christmas hatch but I got 3 Light Sussex chicks the night before Christmas Eve...and one Partridge Silkie 2 days after Christmas...But they are cute and healthy and special anyway! Isn't it just wonderful to have and hear little peeps cooing and chirping!!!???? I didn't realize how much I have missed that! Pics to come soon...lol

I can't wait to see the purple chicken! I have to ask...is Sophie purple too?

My new CLB cockeral watching over his new flock. Graphite (3 weeks) is three times the size of the Silkies (1 week, 2 days). The girls are closer in age and size so they're not as intimidating. I wish I could have taken a pic last night. Graphite was in the middle with all the silkies and CLB girls cuddled up to him under the ecoglow

The silkies are following him around today, and even trying to sit under him like chicks under a hen lol, but yesterday they were like, "You are BIG dude."

The birds are very cute! The silkies are so sweet and tiny. And I like the idea of the ice cube tray feeder. I'm still figuring out the different breeds, what is a CLB?
Sophie IS actually purple, although not from the Blu-kote (she was wearing gloves). My niece was diagnosed with kidney cancer at 9 months old this summer. Sophie really wanted to do something, but what can you do? So, she had all her hair cut off and donated it to locks of love in honor of her cousin. Her hair wasn't that long, so they had to cut it REALLY short, to get enough hair. The girl who cut it for her had a short, sort of punk hairdo with purple streaks, and Sophie really liked it. The girl asked if Sophie could get a couple of purple streaks (they are temporary) and since she is homeschooled with no dress code to worry about we decided she could keep the purple streaks until the baby was cancer free. We can hide it for church or pictures under a wide headband. But now, everyone is joking that I let her dye her chicken to match! I'm thinking that he is growing so fast, he will probably shed his feathers faster?

I guess we'll see. At least I'm not the only one to have an issue with it, I'll be doing q-tips from now on!

Sorry to hear about your niece . Sophia sounds like she is a wonderful young girl to care so much! She honored her cousin in 2 ways with her hair! You must be so proud of her! I hope your niece recovers quickly!

Sophie is one special little girl

and yes, CLB mean Cream Legbar.

Ooh! I googled them, those cream legbars are pretty! And auto sexing with blue eggs! I bet the kids would love that. Hmmm... Maybe if I ever figure out how to incubate eggs we'll have to try a few. Thanks for the well wishes about my niece. She left SC for two months to go to St. Jude's and they really were wonderful. We're hoping she will be cancer free in March when they do her next set of scans. And Sophie is special, thank you. So are my other five but they don't do as much with the chickens. My son is interested in the genetics part but is nervous around the older birds, my older daughter likes them but doesn't like cleaning out the coop or going out to feed them in the rain! Sophie wants to learn it all, even helped with the egg-topsy

and then the littler ones just think they are funny and cute.

Is Sophie involved with any clubs like 4H? I'm looking into it for mine, but don't know much about the program. My 5 year old DD also loves the chickens and doesn't get too upset when something bad happens (DS is another story...). I think it would be great for her to learn more about animals.

Prayers being sent on behalf of your niece. St Jude' is wonderful. Best wishes for a great set set of scans in March!

We got our first incubator through 4H (Hovabator w/o a hygrometer

) and they supplied me with a complete curriculum to use with the kids that was through Clemson Cooperative extension. Worksheets on chicken reproduction, egg anatomy, chick development, etc. No cost. I know they do have a poultry program, which includes week old pullets that the kids get to raise for a while then sell at market to put money back into the program. Sophie might do that, but it doesn't start until spring. They also have farming programs for growing corn and other vegetables, and ones for raising certain types of livestock (rabbits, or goats I think?) we did the hatching project to start with.

Wow, that's awesome! Did you go to Clemson? Or apply for the packet? This may be a dumb question...but can they buy their own birds? I have a feeling that if DS did the raise a pullet program he wouldn't be able to let her go. He cried for hours when the first of our weak chicks died.

Of course maybe it would be better to just let DD do it.
I use a Hovabator Genesis 1588 w/o hygrometer, but purchased one from Petsmart in the reptile section. I think I would have hatched 6/8, with one DIS and one shrink wrapped at the zip stage, if I hadn't helped the shrink wrapped one. But it was my first hatch so I obviously have lots to learn, just like the kiddos!
