We're they not splintable? What were the issues?
It wasn't splay leg, nor crooked toes. The feet were curled inwards and the chicks were waddling on their hocks. One got flipped over by mama bird and was unable to even flip itself back over. These two chicks took an awfully long time to hatch, they were the last ones to do so actually. Maybe being in the egg so long had to do with it? I've ran into this problem a few times over the years, and I haven't been able to find much info about it. I've tried splinting on problem chicks like these before, but it did no good and they eventually got worse, their poor little hocks swelled and got raw from them scooting around on them and had to be culled.

Ok, I was told yesterday by the woman I sometimes purchase feed from that you could tell the sex of a day to 2 day old chick by blowing on its "vent" . She says when you do this something will pop out on the males and not on the females....Is this a new type of vent sexing? I told her she would have to show me that one as I had not heard it done that way before....
Ok, has anyone else heard of this??? Yes, I know the standard vent sexing method and I believe someone was pulling this woman's leg when they told her this one. She says she has not proven yet that it works but she has seen a difference in the chicks and believes it to work. I think I will stick to feather sexing!

I have not found feather sexing to be accurate but then maybe it is the person (me) doing it that is the problem!

I had another crappy hatch. I got one d'anver that hatched on its own and one of my bo/blrw mixes that I had to help out twice! Anyway they seem fine now so then I went and bought a blue silkie baby and an EE. I have been told buying one of each according to chicken law means I am going to have only roos. I guess we will see! I hope not! Lol! So I guess I will wait a bit for trying to hatch again . Maybe it is the humidity? I was doing an experiment in two different bators. The brower all the chicks died at some point. I am not sure if it was a temp spike or what.

Hey thanks for the information!! I am not choosing to incubate eggs at this time. Just purchasing some chicks from our local feed store. One of the ladies there is very helpful and has answered many of my questions. We have 4 acres for our hens to roam..supervised. We are building a pretty big pen for them as well. I do appreciate your comments!! Good luck with all your birds!! You have your hands full.

Anybody in or around the Anderson area have turkey chicks for sale?? Only want 3. Using them for holiday birds. I was going to start a flock of turkeys this year but starting 3 different flocks of heritage birds instead. Thanks

I barely ever get on here anymore but wanted to drop by and say hello! Sadly we lost our sweet little BB red OEGB rooster yesterday. Just wondering if anyone on here around upstate SC raises them or knows someone who raises any that are good quality.

Lauren, doesn't Patsy have BBR OEGB's? I may be mistaken but I thought she did....

Also, if that does not work there is a man about 70 miles out of Savannah up Hwy 321 in FarFax, SC, Choice Bantams, that raises really nice OEGB's and might be able to get you one. His name is Greg Krease ~ [email protected] ~ He knows lots of people that have the birds in the state too. He probably ships. Hope this helps....

I work with Greg's son, Matt Kearse. I am fairly certain they consolidated all the chickens to Matt's house in Hampton. If you can't get ahold of Greg, I can talk to Matt at work and pass on his contact info if he agrees. I was out there a few weeks ago and they were in the midst of relocating chickens then.
