South Carolina

Hello from Bluffton! I am new to keeping chickens. Having moved from Philadelphia, behng in SC finally allows me to live the country life. My coop is going up and chicks will be arriving in three weeks. The excitement is overwhelming!!

Originally from Delaware. What a difference SC is to the Mid-Atlantic area!

Thanks for the welcome! There definitely seems to be a lot of transplants in the area... And more every day.

What kind of predators do you face? I've seen a fox a few times so that is my biggest concern. I'm really hoping my dogs will adopt the chicks and become protectors as well as making the coop as predator proof as possible.

I have dealt with raccoons (killed 1st flock of 6) and seen coyotes. The raccoon incident was our fault. We moved (2 miles) and decided to move the flock after we settled in. I think not having regular dog & people smell around the coop & run made them bold.

Foxes, raccoons, hawks, and bobcats have taken the most of my birds. Rat snakes will occasionally take young birds or eggs. To me raccoons are the worst because they'll kill a whole coop and only eat one or two. We have an Anatolian shepherd now so predator losses for the most part (we do have this one reoccurring night predator, most likely a bobcat, that's taken some in the past month) have been reduced.

Hello All! Joining the SC thread, happy to have found you all. I have lived in roughly the same area of upstate SC all my life. I first kept chickens as a boy oohhh 30 something lol years ago and have raised chickens steady now for somewhere over 15 years. Always kept my fowl penned because we're over run with hawks and owls. For the first decade plus, the only chickens I ever lost to predators were black snakes which would take eggs, chicks and occasionally wrap around a full grown hens neck on the roost at night and choke her out before deciding she was to large to eat (snake won't kill anything it can't eat...don't believe that!). We've been getting hit by Raccoons lately. Also, in the past several years we've been getting the fox and coyotes that have spread across the countryside recently and now I'm hearing about armadillos and black bear Oh My! Chicken folks are good folks...glad to know you all!!
