South Carolina

Looking forward to reading more of this thread here. Just wanted to say hello. I'm a new guy with small flock dreams. Lol. Down in the lowcountry of South Carolina, almost savannah.
Just wanted to stop in and say Hi.

I'll be looking to get some birds In a couple months I think. Should be building coop this weekend. We'll see how that progresses.

Beaufort area? We have a house down there. Best fishing and shrimping in the state

What if you let your chickens free range some?  How can you prevent beak to beak contact?  That would make it really difficult for a hobby farmer.  I'm just gleaning from what I saw you guys discussing.

If I'm not mistaken, then it would be considered one flock. Maybe Susan could answer, but I think that would mean all birds tested the first year, then 10% of all birds after that

I guess Ohio always considers everything you own to be part of the same flock.

Good question. I don't free range any of my birds, due to the predators we have here. It makes sense that, if you do let them free range, then they all would be considered one flock and would need to be tested.

On another note....4 birds bathed, trimmed, and drying in the bathroom.

Yep. Love the area for fishing, giging and shrimping. Water sports galore too.

I'm having to plan for hot and humid weather in my coop making. It's getting complicated quickly.....

And I'd rather get chicks/eggs here as opposed to a hatchery. Nothin against them, I just like my neighbors too. Lol

The big thing will be shade. Are you close to the coast? The breeze will help.
We have a place on Lady's Island and a flats boat. We fish all over Port Royal and Calibogue

We have marsh nearby. Close enough to have a benefit but not enough to feel the breeze off of the water. My employer and good friend gives me access to his 14.6' flats boat and I fish between Hilton head Bluffton up the broad river.

Have a couple oaks with good shade. Planning on light colors also.

The colors don't matter so much. Chickens all handle cold better than they do heat. Just provide them with shade and clean water, and you will be fine. I covered half of my pens with a metal roof last year, and even with the sweltering summer we had everyone was fine.
I do most of my redfishing in Station Creek, cobia and tarpon in the Broad
