Decided to add to the design a larger door on the back almost in the middle of the length of it and also will be adding a 1" of hardware cloth at the top of the coop before the roof for ventilation. Still making up my mind about the ventilation.
Then trim work to pretty it up and a metal roof.![]()
Sounds good! What kind of chickens do you want?
Not picky. I like delawares and cclegbars. I originally wanted barred rocks since I tie flies for fishing and the barred hackle feathers are perfect for a couple flies I use.
But now I care less and I'm just focused on having a couple happy healthy birds and getting to enjoy hatching occasionally. So I'll probably reach out to everyone locally here for either hatching eggs or birds when I've got everything set up.
Barred rocks are hard to beat for an all around hen with a good disposition, but the roosters can be a little feisty. Are you looking for hatchery type layers, or are you wanting a more breeder quality bird? There's nothing wrong with either one, it just depends on what your long term goals are
I bought my first four birds six years ago. Now I have seven pens and between 120 and 130 birdsI
I'd rather start with breeder quality, and try to stay relatively local. Not that I'm opposed to shipping. But I've read about the hazards of shipping eggs and low hatch rate. Also i'm not necessarily looking to breed and show birds. Just have a fun hobby.
But from what I hear chicken math will take me over anyhow. Who knows. I guess that's why I am saying I want to start with 3/4 birds. Lol. Start low

I've had birds for over fifteen years and don't have but a few now. Buff Orpingtons are a good dependable bird for the backyard family flock. Decent layers, good disposition even the roosters. Not the personality of Ameraucanas but very gentle. I want to go fishing with you guys! I love the Beaufort area but haven't been back since my daughter moved away from there last year.
