Tell me why you like the cuckoo Marans. I'm curiously interested.

The eggs are not nearly as dark as black coppers, but they just have the best dispositions of any of my birds. Friendly, not aggressive, not flighty, the rooster is the best rooster I have. He respects me, but is the head of his flock. If you care about eating your chickens, they are a fantastic table bird. Just the most versatile all around breed I have

Okay, I can see I'm going to have to set up an automatic draw to your account.

. I love the cuckoo and barred pattern and would like to have a darker egg laying bird. I was going to get Dominiques but a friendly bird is a big requirement for me. Are you hatching any?

As a matter of fact, after these 2 batches of AMs hatch, I'm setting cuckoos in one incubator. Cuckoos are not nearly as dark as the BCM. If you look at an egg color chart, cuckoos are usually a 4, with a few 3s (below the minimum for marans), and rare 5s. The eggs are huge, though, and they lay well. My cuckoos also came from a hatchery. I think over the years the egg color has been lost in cuckoos because they were crossed with barred rocks.
Another benefit of cuckoo marans is some of them will brood
This is the chart, 1-9. It's not extremely accurate online, but you get the idea

Nice! They are still a lot darker than my BO, White Rock, and SL Wyandotte.

I have cuckoo marans. Look similar to barred rocks, and my favorite all around bird

I'll be in touch sometime soon I'm sure. A relatively friendly bird is something I am after as well. And probably higher on my priority list than I realize. Table fair will matter at some point or another. And a broody never hurts.

Nice banana tree (I think) in the background. Get any off of it?
