South Carolina

Hi there! We are in Ridgeville (not far from Summerville). We just moved into our new home in a little farm- we were blessed with a pre existing barn that included one of the stables being a pre-existing chicken coop- it leads out to a covered dog run, with nesting boxes already in place. Good Lord y'all, I don't know the difference between a pullet and a Rooster or scratch and feed? I have a lot to learn! Any words of wisdom? We are looking at getting from Cochins from Bee city (they are so cute and fluffy)- are they good egg layers? Where do I start?! Lol

I say, get what your eyes like at first. If its cute, then you will love it enough to clean its bottom. You will get eggs too. Not big eggs. But, they lay. Cochins are cute and crazy fun to watch them run. Your first chickens will teach you your first 100 lessons and help you decide what to get next. I say just do it :)

ISO Pullets - I'm looking for any variety of the following breeds as close to 18 weeks as possible. Preferably from the same location - looking to purchase 6 birds total. EE, Ameraucana, Crested Cream Legbar, Spitzhauben, Silkie, Speckled Sussux, Light and/or Dark Brahma, BLR or Splash Wyandotte. Must be pullets as I already have 2 up and coming cockerels and I'm not ready to make any of them dinner yet.

I posted this on the local FB page as well, but figured I'd come here, just in case. Looking to purchase soon.

The best way to find true Ameraucana is to look at the breeders page on the Ameraucana website...http://www.ameraucanabreedersclub.org/breedersdirectory.html

There are quite a few breeders in the SE and several in SC. :)

I'm bringing blue and splash marans
And EE about a month and a half old.
And blue EE and mixed colored EE, about a week old.

Already know there will also be silkies, rabbits, and some mini pot belly pigs

Union, SC here.
We just bought a little 8 acre bit of property and want to turn it into a mini farm (want to keep some of is wild).
So the first two things we're going to start with is a large veggie garden and chickens for egg production.
Neither of us have owned chickens before so we're looking for some people in our area that we can talk with and learn from.
If there is anyone or any groups in our area who we can "bend the ear" of please let us know.

Thanks and greetings to all fellow cluck people.

Hi Amanda! This site is great for all your questions and there are several good resources near you for advice and chicks, eggs, etc. I'm not too far from you in Abbeville.

My advice to anyone looking into chicken farming is first, just get a few.
Research is something you will do along the way as you come across new experiences. There will be highs and lows in chicken keeping. Nothing teaches like experience.
First I would suggest considering your coop. There must be a place of sanctuary to sleep at night. This is true for free-range birds or coop and run birds. Then get any bird that you think is pretty. This makes cleaning the coop easier when you really like the chickens you are cleaning for lol. You can always move up to pure breeds when you feel confident.
There are many resources on this forum for learning about chickens. Check in the "Learning Center" at the top. Welcome to the club!
