Hi Cpatherfan! I'm near Simpsonville with a flock of 36. 31 layers and 5 roos. Had a friend tell me yesterday that she can't eat store bought eggs anymore now that she has eaten ours
So she came by and bought 5 dozen today! Love it!
Cpantherfan, just a question- are you sure those white chicks are leghorns? To my admittedly untrained eye, they look suspiciously like Cornish X. But goodness knows I am no expert, just curious!
Y'all, I think I've got me a broody Black Star! Weird, huh? I hope she follows through!
You don't want to make them dinner? I'm sure you'll find someone who will be willing to take them off your hands.
It really depends on what you are looking for in your flock. I myself am pretty happy with my Black Stars (also known as black sex-links) and my Easter Eggers (sold by most hatcheries and feed stores as Araucanas or Ameraucanas). The BS are prolific and we have found them to be friendly and curious. The EEs are a little more shy, but lay gorgeous eggs. I wouldn't do a repeat of the cuckoo Marans, but I don't dislike them. . . I'd just pick a different breed if I had the chance. Everyone has different opinions on what they think is pretty, or what they like in a chicken's personality. I personally am never interested in having any full-blooded Rhode Island Reds- too aggressive for me, too many stories of mean ones. But they are great layers and lay big brown eggs. Popular breeds commonly found around here are Buff and Black Orps, Barred Rocks, EEs, Cochins, and silkies.
