Ah, Mary, is she not getting better? I was hoping she would. (Notice I throw that "she" in there.)

The storm was kinda rough here yesterday as Joy and I stood outside chatting. Her son was not happy with that rough storm and it was blowing into the carport so we climbed into the front of the truck until it passed. There was bad lightening and one loud crack of thunder. Heavy rains and some wind but all my pens and stuff stayed put.
However, I think it snuck up on my chicks outside because I found some very wet 4 week olds huddled under the barn steps soaking wet when I went to put everyone up. They are just so spoiled that I put them up all the time but will run in and out of the brooder room while I have the screen door open so I know they know how to go in and out. Not to mention they often go in the big coop to scratch around. Silly little birds.
The ducklings were fine, of course.
I did find the 2 chicks in my Cochin/Frizzle pen huddled under the Banty Shack but they were dry and the hens had abandoned them to sleep in the little shack so I scooped them up and put them in a brooder. They are only 4 days old. I love for hens to raise chicks but the more I let them the more I lose. In one Frizzle pen I found chicks day after day hatched out and pecked to death so I took all the eggs and let them hatch in the hatcher. I always mark the eggs with a date when I let them set so I know when they are due to hatch.

I think we are due for storms all weekend.

Nadine No change. I made a sling to hold her upright. She is eating and drinking fine. I will give her a couple of more days.
I would bet it is a she since it was the one that was injured. Since it came on so fast, I am betting it is an injury.

I wish we could get some of ya'll's rain.. here in Hickory Tavern ( laurens cty) our property is in like a Bermuda triangle of rain.. there are about 3 properties and the storms will go right around us and we stay dry. we'll get the thunder and lightning but no rain.. just now I got all excited it started to rain.. literally not enough to completely wet ground.. you can see where the drops were.. ahhhhh.. maybe 2 mins..

On another note My little EE roo is doing GREAT and so is the little hen I have left ( don't know why those other tow girls didn't make it.) Little Polish is growing and getting goofier... the 6 silver laced wayndottes stick to the older 3 and everyone is happy..

this is a bit off subject.. but your user name the Bee lady... do you ever put bee boxes at other peoples property. kid of like a helping hand. we have very few bees in our area that i have seen and im concerned about our garden this year and would love for someone to put a bee box out, but I personally don't want to be in-charge of the bee's ( other than make sure nothing happens to their box of course) a little one would be nice but not greedy.. mainly just want the pollinators.

just curious

I lost 14 4-day old birds.

I still blame DH. He is the one that had to fiddle with stuff. I take part blame because I forgot I moved them & needed to check. But he is the one that turned up the dang thing.

takes a deep breath

So this morning he gets up and goes to bathroom right by small brooder. Waterer was leaking. It is soaked. He did not wake me up. He removed the food & water from the brooder & put dry paper towels down. I got up,
ep.gif
saw the mess in the brooder. Dried up chicks, quail & a duck. I ran to town and did a few other things, came back, and washed them all. Put them in the hatcher so I could clean the brooder and they could dry. (around noon) He was looking at the temp so I told him the thermometer in there was not right, it does not register but to 99 degrees. He turned the darn thing up anyway. Just a touch, he says.

This is the LG stryo that he does not like. He had put little black marks on the temp turner thingy and swears that is the right temp. It is not. It is too high. It has to be below that.

A little later, I told him to put the thermometer that registers right in there. For some reason, he says I told him to turn it up. Now it had only been couple hours since he turned it up last. I know it will not be registering yet. He had to tell me it was cool in there - like less than 95. Nicole fixed a new brooder bin for them. I was going to give them a bit to dry....and forgot I moved them. Went to check around 330 - all were dead but one little quail.

Temp was 117 He had turned it way past where his little 'marks' were.. I am

I can't believe I forgot especially my ducky and my silkiessssssssssss

I can't believe I let him try to help. That is why we each have our own incubators.
I can't believe I have not killed him yet...

I'm so sorry Kimberly.

Nobody is allowed to touch my incubators or the heat lamps (they all know this and they wouldn't dare touch them). My husband has had to learn that the chickens are my business, and only mine. He helps with construction, fences and sometimes moving birds around but that's it. He used to think he could help in selling birds and eggs but he made a few promises that he couldn't keep (because he was wrong about prices and availability) and he doesn't do that anymore. It took a few times of me saying "NO, sorry - that birds not for sale" or "no that is not the price" in front of his friends for him to get the message. Now he just tells people they have to check with me.

It works better that way. I'm really sorry for your loss. Losing babies is heartbreaking, but it happens to all of us. This has been a hard week I think. I lost my first silkie hen to a tragic accident. This is the pair of black silkies that live in my duck yard. She liked to perch on the water bucket and has always done this. Somehow, she fell in and couldn't get out and she drowned.

It broke my heart, I knew right away where to look when I couldn't see her in the yard or the duck house. I've shed many tears over my birds, this was my pet and I felt terribly guilty about it. Still heartbroken. I'm very thankful to have lots of her babies growing up, that is a comfort to me. Rest In Peace little Chicken "Nugget". Now to keep Chicken "Noodle" happy til some of the pullets are big enough to put with him.

Kimberly, I hate to hear that! It is a terrible thing to have happen.

Seems like the more animals we have the more likely we are to have a tragedy. Statistics. Bummer.

Talk about it coming in 3's! Ouch!
First my SLC roo chick got stuck under the feed bowl and died, then Kimberly's brooder and Joy's Silkie.
DD also lost 3 old Guinea Pigs this week. Mother and son on the same day, they were 4 and 5 years old, which was odd.
And Mr. Poppy died, one of the babies from a sow DD started with over seven years ago, we still have his sister, Pixel, also turning 7 this year.

Okay, everyone, there's the relief for you. The 3's are accomplished and no one needs to have anything bad happen.

Nadine,

I didn't have anything die today, and I am so sorry for the ones who did

However, my DH was in the coop building a divider for my brooder, with my chicks still in it
rant.gif

These are my golden laced chicks who rush me when I open the door and try and jump out- He wasn't paying attention one of the tiny chicks jumped out and he never noticed! I went out to see when he had finished and the first thing I did was count heads. One was gone! I scrambled through all the pine shavings, checked behind waterers and feeders, checked the other side of the divider all while freaking out my husband was just standing there calmy swearing there were only 4.
he.gif

My DH found the chick under our 8 x 8 building and ended up catching it and returning it to me. I told him he is no longer allowed inside the coop unsupervised and he is NEVER allowed to open the brooders. Only 4 chicks pshhhh!
