Ack! More babies?? I have 18 eggs in the bator now but they won't all be staying. A few......5, 8 or 10.....will be going to live somewhere else for a while until they show themselves to be roos. Then those have to come back here or maybe all but one.
I'll have to see how much room I have as I am still building little pens and condos. I like the white ones. They are so pure looking.

Oh, Jackie! Jaques has really gotten a lot prettier! Er.....more handsome! I have his brother still but he isn't near as handsome.

Those Guineas are ultra cute! That is simply amazing that they eat from your hand and you can pick them up. But screaming comes naturally to them when held, for sure! They scream a lot of times when I take them from the hatcher. I think those are the girls.

You have done a fantastic job in training them to be real birds and not spazzes! Mine are certainly the more spaz like keets.

I can't see Jacques feet but look at his brothers foot feathers. Unreal and he lives in the Muscovy pen on dirt and grass.

He isn't as gorgeous as Jaques but I like him because he has that buckskin color and my favorite Quarter horses were always the buckskins. We owned quite a few at one time.

Are these bantam cochin roos??

Yes, I have about 15 bantam roos running around in all different colors from my breeding projects. The ugly ones get eaten first.

Do you have a mini traffic cone for the banties...my son has some he puts in the yard making bike runs and I thought of you today when I saw them!! I told my DH about your cone last week and he rolled on the floor laughing!!

No, I have to hold the legs or DH just lets them fall through!

Not too good when you know what is already in the bucket underneath.
Hey the orange cone means "hazard"! Our version of the killing cone.

I agree that your JG x Langshan cross would be a mixed breed. And maybe I'm misunderstanding what they did with these birds. But the brief paragraph they have in my book led me to believe that Gelder ended up with two types of the same bird from the same crossing (one with muffs and beard and one without). I'll quote the book word for word: "Van Gelder crossed Bearded d/Anvers with feather-legged bantams in an attempt to get a booted bird with low posture, a compact and asymmetrical body, a full beard, and a single comb. Today the APA and ABA recognize the two as separate but closely related breeds. They have the same description in all ways except that the d'Uccle has a full beard and muffs and the Booted doesn't." This book recognizes over 100 breeds of birds with color photos, each breed getting a separate write up. But they even combine the D'uccle and Booted in the book, they share the same description. Like I said, I could just be misunderstanding the way the breeds came about. Either way, they're both great birds.

Further research shows that nobody really knows for sure about these birds. There are conflicting stories, some people think they came from the same breeding and some people don't believe they even came from the same person. Here's what Wiki says:
The Booted Bantam is closely related to the Belgian Bearded d'Uccle. The most significant differences in conformation between the two are the d'Uccle's feather beard and the greater height of the Booted.[2] Some sources assert the two breeds share a singular point of origin, with a Belgian breeder around the beginning of the 20th century.[3] Other sources point to a clearly documented presence in the Netherlands since the 16th century,[4] and note that the Booted Bantam is known to this day in the Netherlands, as the Nederlandse Sabelpootkriel (Dutch, Dutch saber-legged bantam).[2] Whatever their exact relation, Booted Bantams and Bearded d'Uccles are only two of a handful of chicken breeds to possess vulture hocks, (Sultans do too).

So there - now it's clear as mud for me!

I am by no means a chicken expert, on contrary I am a newbie. But, Wiki is not a reliable source. Anyone can create an account and post anything they want. Accuracy is not verified on Wiki. Not to say this info isn't true. Just Saying...
