Oh Suzanne - Bless your heart.

I feel your pain. DH's family used to do the sing-a-long EVERY Christmas, it's pure torture. Seriously....torture. We never have time for all that since we have 3 family parties all on Christmas Eve and we're rushed to get everywhere with everything. And to sit thru that and also sometimes the "reading" of the Christmas story.

I sit there thinking of all the things I need to be doing and time seems to STOP.

Normally I love it! My husband is the youngest of 5 and I have 13 nieces and nephews. Everyone plays an instrument and can sing beautifully. I usually get the tambourine. My MIL is a cellist. My DH plays guitar, piano, banjo, harmonica.... and sings so well. I hope he'll just go and let me stay in town. My FIL died four years ago and my MIL really loves spending time with her kids. She turned 80 this week and I just saw everyone last weekend. I know they won't miss me!

STOP TALKING ABOUT NEW CHICKEN BREEDS! GOSH! Now I need to know about Wyandottes. The D'Uccles were bad enough.

I guess I'm just like the rest of us. Someone starts raving about a breed and then suddenly I feel like I want it.

But Susanne, you really need to check out the Wyandottes!!! Oh, and everyone should have at least a pair of d'Uccles.... Oh, I will stop~

Yes, I'm sure Ideal sell them but I am looking for a nice heritage line and would like to stay away from the hatcheries.

I had 5 Dominiques but they were from a hatchery. Nice and laid back. And the boys are different than the girls so they're easy to sex (lighter or darker... I can't remember). Very pretty! I kept two girls but the hawk got them this summer.

I thought that was one of their fine points was the barring made them less likely to be seen by hawk?

I had a friend up in Landrum that was raising them. I haven't talked to him in years. His wife milked their goats and made goat cheese. Yummy.
They only had Doms. I had latched onto 5 heritage girls and when he saw mine he talked me out of them. I really liked them the short time I had them so I got 10 from a hatchery but could not hang on to those either. They sold like mad. Maybe because Grandmas used to have them. I gave up on them but I sure enjoyed them while I had them. They were small like the Leghorn and laid a huge egg like the Leghorn, too. Great foragers from what I could tell. I like a rose comb and may someday go back to them.

Oh yeah, imo, a barred bird looks like it has white and black bars on it but a cuckoo looks like it is blurred. Not sure if that will help identify barred birds over cuckoos.

Amy, I saw a web for some people up North that had Tog goats and raised Dominiques--could this be them? That web said they would not ship birds or eggs, pick up only. How far are you from them?

I am about 10 miles from the Englands. They used to come to the farm a good bit to learn as much as possible about chickens when they first got started with them.
I need to call them again and check in. Sometimes we all just get too busy to keep up.
They are really nice folks and I enjoyed visiting with them.
I am not sure if they have a website but they might.

I got a pair of 8 week old black giant cochins and a trio of Mille fleur d'anvers!!! What an awesome birthday pressie to go to a chicken show!

And I also found out I'm expecting my own little chick to hatch in July. Eek!
