Welcome Tobi, I'm in Duncan. I guess we're neighbors.

Thanks Amy, I'll be stringing me some peppers to hang up this Fall. I love saving things like that to use over the winter. I meant to plant some garlic too, but haven't gotten around to it.

Ok, so I guessed from the recent posts that I am the only one who keeps the chicks under heat for so long (in the winter). I mean, I never did that in summer but I hatched chicks all winter and this was a little different. Anyway, went out to the brooder house (aka greenhouse) today and guess what I found .... yep - an egg!!!! Guess it was time, so I moved most of my chickies out. I'll be moving the rest out tomorrow as it's too hot to keep using the greenhouse now. I sure hope they're all ok in the morning when they wake up in a new home and have new "big" chickens to deal with. Some are in grower pens, but some I went ahead and put with the appropriate breed. Ummmm......I'm running a little short on space here.

Anybody need any white leghorns or black silkies?

I also have a young pair of serama's that I will probably part with....maybe. Hope ya'll all enjoy the beautiful weather tomorrow and get lots accomplished! I've got so much to do I'm not sure where to start.

When I had chicks they stayed in a heated area as long as they indicated they needed heat. Heck, Joy, those JG I purchased from you like their heated coop so well I had to push them out in the sun the other day and shut the door behind them. Big or small I warm them all!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to drop in and say HI! I've been so busy outside that I haven't been on much which is funny cause I just joined.....

My chickies are just about completely feathered on their wings, two have feathery bottoms already but Poof the duckling still looks the same only HUGE. They are outside permently in the large brooder that has a light that is only on at night. They are growing like crazy which makes me sad...no more little chickies to hold

I have two hens that do not like the babies nor anything else that throws off their status in the flock.

goofy girls. I moved them to my laying pens. Well one I did.....the other will be a breeder. She is a good bird just wants to keep her place at top of pecking order.

Only spoiled chicks I have are my silkies...they stay inside or in basement brooder until about 3-4 months old.

The other breeds I am throwing on the ground as soon as they start getting cute little tail feathers in.

I have some FBCMs that I moved outside this morning - about 3-4 weeks old. Some have feathered in wings & getting tails and they go outside in a little tractor thingy. Others have feathered wings & no tail feathers much yet so they are still in the basement brooder. I do have a 50 watt ( I think - maybe 75 watt) bulb in a lamp out there and it is set to come on at dusk and off at dawn. I will remove that light in another 2-3 weeks.
Seems that once they hit the ground, they grow better

ETA: I do not really THROW the chicks. And they do not literally HIT the ground.

Joy,
I still have 3-4 month olds still under lights. I jut can't seem to bring myself to move them out where they may get bumped around. I have a blue Silkie and blue Sizzle that are just too precious and several really nice Mille Fleur project Cochin pullets that I can't take a chance of them getting chilled or hurt so they are a bit spoiled. They may not have direct heat anymore but they are in the brooder room and can get to the lamps.

Friday I had Nicole smash up the hard boiled eggs and I fed that as a treat to some of my youngsters and breeders. They do love the eggs. Nicole said it was the worse thing she ever had to do! Smashing eggs is not her favorite job! I'll smash eggs over lugging water to the pens any day.

I'm with you Amy Nadine, carrying (and cleaning) the drinkers is my LEAST favorite thing to do. I think I'd rather clean nest boxes.

And thank goodness I'm not the only one keeping the chicks warm a bit longer, I was beginning to think I was crazy or something.

I did move some babies out yesterday, but they still have heat. And I always watch, anybody not getting along gets moved. I hate to see them pick at each other. It's just too much work to hatch and raise these babies for me to risk anything happening to them. I prefer to sell adult birds, but when I do sell chicks I give plenty of information on how to take care of them. I love to raise chicks under broody hens, the chicks do seem to grow and feather faster. But I also lose some sometimes to new mothers or all other kinds of problems that come up.

Kimberly, I'm glad to know you don't literally "toss" the chicks out there onto the ground.
