South Carolina

If anyone in SC is interested: I need to down size and have some Partridge Silkie's I'd love to part with. All were born earlier this year, and some were born this month. As far as I can tell they have no DQ's, and are not from hatchery stock. These silkies are from a fellow BYC member whom is known for producing SQ silkies. My loss is someone's potential gain. Just PM me if anyone is interested. Nikki

No way Suzanne! I love for the hens to raise the babies, they do a much better job than I can. And I don't give them a heat lamp when they have a mother hen (at least not in the summer).

Congrats on the babies!

So sorry about your dog, that is always so sad. Sorry about your chickens too. Your death toll with the hawk is about what I had from the coyote. You really need to get another dog to live with your chickens, but I couldn't tell you what kind would work. I'm still having issues with my Great Pyrs, they are livestock guardians that apparently do not view chickens as livestock, pets or family but only just toys that double as a snack.

Even training with a shock collar hasn't helped so they'd sure better grow out of this ... soon!

I have two black Ameraucana chicks, one blue French Marans chick, and five Wheaten Marans chicks (one is definitely a boy) if interested. The Marans lay dark chocolate eggs and the Ameraucanas lay blue.

I may be interested in the Ameraucana chicks. How old are they? Trying to think of how crazy my weekend is.

They are about 10 days old. And super cute! I'm not actively selling them so if you can't come this weekend, I should still have them.

So sorry! I lost two of my lav silkies a few weeks ago. Not fun. I have three roosters in my lav coop that are black splits (or just black... I don't know for sure). They just started crowing. You can have one if you want.

ETA: Technically they are cockerals I guess. They were born in November.

Ahhh that was so sweet of you to offer her!!! and OP I'm sorry for your loss... I hope you catch that little dog!

What about a Lab MIx?? Both of my dogs I adopted (years apart) from the pound as pups. They have been the best dogs around the chickens, Bella my youngest is about 2 years old she is a Boxer/Mastiff Mix and Maximus is about 6 years old now is a Lab/American Bulldog Mix. They are both really good with all my pets. The only animals I don't trust bella with is my rabbit because she looks at it like its a squirrel
ep.gif
And she loves to chase squirrels!! She will practically jump up to my 6ft high fence and hang onto the top of the fence just to let the squirrel now who is boss of the yard. I am still working with her though, I'll hold the bunny and let his sniff and lick it and tell her good girl and tell her this is bunny... Haha because she knows what the name squirrel is!! Anyways I have always had a great experience with mixed breed dogs... It might be something to consider when your searching. I always like to rescue them to from the pound or a rescue agency

I found Bella on Petfinder.com a woman who rescue's dogs and re-homes them.

I am very sorry OP that you had to put your dog down... that is a very hard thing to do. We've always owned dogs growing up and they were always part of the family so when anything ever happened to them it was so hard to adjust to them being gone. A new puppy always helps to bring some joy back into your days, if it's something that you can manage right now. I'd love to know when you do find one, what kind of dog you get. Until then

for your losses, but happy for the new baby chicks that just hatched. Life certainly is a roller coaster of emotions...

I agree on the lab. Blue, the dog we put down yesterday, was a lab mix and he was great with the chickens. He only came around them when he thought I was giving them treats and then he was only interested in the food. He never gave the chickens a second look. He was our second lab. I love them!

i hate it when a dog kills my chickens. about 3 weeks ago my sons 3 month old puppies chased and killed my main wheaton ameraucana rooster. i do have some chicks off him. so all is not lost and i have5 hens with chicks now. 2 hens has 11 w b/w ameraucanas baby chicks. and i still have 3 more hens setting and 2 of them is setting on ameraucana eggs. maybe i can raise 2 really nice roosters from him, because he was really a good looking rooster.

Susanne - TY for the offer, I will add it to the list of people I need to visit. Right under Amy

I am going to wait until we get this dog before replacing my roos. It absolutely ticked me off to lose silkies.

No sighting of the dog this morning. We only see it early morning. Yes we did lose and OEG hen, which had to be day before yesterday after we turned them out early. I won't be letting anyone run around and free range until later in the mornings now. It has only been seen 4 times on our road. A neighbor up the street had a little chi, that would run down here...until I almost ran over it, I did not see it next door, and it ran across the drive as I was pulling in, and it has not been back.

I know people used to always set animals out near us when we first moved here. Always young dogs or pups, or kittens. It was woods all over across the road from us. Since they cleared that off 3-4 years after we moved here & moved homes in shortly afterwards, it pretty much stopped. DH said OK when I mentioned borrowing the neighbor's live trap. He did not like idea of me shooting this dog since it is wearing a collar and may have a tag. Maybe it is me but I have no issues doing so. I will do what I have to do.

We have one man up the road a short bit that is crazy.
gig.gif
He has a pit or two, in a fenced yard, and if ANY other dog comes up in his yard and gets near the fence, his dogs go nuts. So he shoots the strangers immediately. He also knows who has what dogs, so if one of ours were to wander up there, he would let us know, as he has in the past.

I was totally prepared to shoot our black mouth cur last week. He got loose while DH & I had ran to the store. Nicole got home and he was running around the yard. She caught him. I got home shortly afterwards, and walked in front door & out the back armed. Ducks & chickens were free ranging, so I went looking for any missing birds. If I had found one, we would have been minus a dog. Nothing was harmed
ep.gif
DH was totally shocked that I went out armed before I knew if anything was lost.

I hate it that you are still having dog problems. I can't believe you lost that roo! It is always the ones we want to breed! naughty as he might of been, he was still your only lav, wasn't he?

LOL Kimberly, you know you can come anytime to visit. I miss you guys! Sometimes it gets a bit boring talking only to the chickens. I love them but there isn't much intelligent conversation to give back to me! LOL Although some life lessons can be learned but with all the work I have to do who has time to stop and smell the chicken poo? Er....roses!

I had a really great helper this morning though and am tickled that I was able to enjoy a respite from doing things by myself. It is amazing what duck eggs can lure in!

Got the top all finished on my blue duck coop and put on. It hinges in the front so I will be able to lift the lid and get eggs out! Now I have to cut the door, paint it and hinge it on.
