Moonchild, I am sorry about NaddyBlue. We have had a some what up and down time here this week. My one polish pen came down with Cocci and it was pretty touch and go for a few day. We even ended up giving some Sulmet treated water, as they were not drinking. I was so happy today to go out this morning and see most of the occupants in that pen run up to the door asking for food. I have one other splash cochin that was running loose come down with it too--odd since free range usually avoid getting it. She is back up and eating today. I bet a non-chicken person would think me nuts it they saw me in the polish pen or any of the other pens walking around in the morning looking at chicken "poop"!

My DH helped me put some metal roofing on top of the polish pen yesterday too! When the storm went through here today their pen stayed pretty dry and so did they!

Here is to wishing you all good luck getting your babies through this time of year and that stage when they are so susceptible to so much including cocci!!!

Hey Where Can you get Sulmet? and what all does it treat?
Amy-What was the name of that place you order your medication from on line? I total forgot it? and will need some A-D-E vit soon!!!

Moonchild, finally had time to google myself~here is what I found on Sulmet:

Treats Chickens for:

Infectious Coryza (Avibacterium paragallinarum)

Coccidiosis (Eimeria tenella, Eimeria necatrix)

Acute Fowl Cholera (Pasteurella multocida)

Pullorum Disease (Salmonella Pullorum)

I was told by my vet that if I treated for Cocci with Sulmet I did not have to treat for worms as it would kill worms also. Hope this is of some help.

You can get sulmet at tsc. I've seen it sold there.

Also this a heads up to other sc people. I have a special needs serama (it has CRD) we think so it needs a home where it will be an only chicken. Let me know if anyone knows of a good home. Otherwise we will be culling him. He's in qt right now. I have him posted in the for sale section. He's free though

Well, I have been very surprised this year to have 4 black sex links go broody. They have sat long enough to hatch ducklings and the first hen was a great mother. I wish I could say the same about these last few. They have hatched ducklings but want to continue to sit. Today one hen apparently brought out 6 muscovy ducklings and left them outside. She went back in the little house and sat while these babies were lost outside. 2 of them died before I found them, the other 4 were stuck in the wire (I have a little pen around their house). The poor 4 ducklings were getting comfort from my dog who was laying on the other side of the fence trying to keep them warm. I sure wish I had 4 more dogs like him. So, a sexlink might go broody and she might sit and hatch but that doesn't mean she will be a good mother hen.

I order from either Cutler Supply or First State Vet Supply. Sulmet is a very affordable medication for cocci. I don;t know how it is for other problems as I haven't had it to clear up anything else mine get. I have tried it on the youngsters that are always getting caught out in the rain and get the sniffles. I was hoping a mild medication would help but they do not seem to do any better while on it.

I swear! As soon as I put chicks out in the little pens it comes a rain. What is the deal here? It is a conspiracy!

I no sooner had them out yesterday then it started raining. they are covered up some but if it rains sideways they get it. It is small cages on the ground so not a lot of protection from rain. Bless their little hearts, it is like they get a shower almost every day. Thankfully it was after dark before we got more rain last night!

Joy, I understand what you are saying! My Jersey Giants go broody but when I let them sit and hatch they just throw the baby out of the nest and continue to set. They want to be broody and ill tempered but not a mama. I like them better when they are up doing chickeneering stuff. Making eggs and looking beautiful should be all they have to do.

Hre is the new lovely pair of Guineas roaming my farm now! Thanks to Joy, Guinea boy has a mate. She is a wild one. Not wild as far as not letting me get close but wild that she takes him wandering more than he used to. My neighbors watch out for them as they are roaming around off my property now. Guinea girl did go coop up one night but Guinea boy can't get her to go back in. She would rather sleep at night in the trees behind the barn, much to his displeasure but he if comes in by himself then she wanders around hollering for him and it tears his fragile nerves up.

He did come in a few nights ago by himself and I feared she was gone for good but the next morning she was out in the barnyard and he was itching to get out of the coop.
Guineas have been interesting. And now I have about 12 little ones growing up who are the cutest little things I have ever seen!
