Wow, so many friendly people!! So nice to have another opportunity to make new friends too. I tried to do the "my page" thing, and upload some pictures, but that is so way over my head right now.
Back to the chickens. Fiance brought home 13...4 week olds. They turned into 7 roosters, 6 hens. I found that out one morning, 2 weeks ago, now 3...when I went out to feed and water them. The big boy was pecking the heads of the other roosters. So, I kicked him out, gave him water only (he could free range), and fiances co-worker came to get him the next day. That left 6. We were going to keep 2, and slaughter 4...toss them in the freezer for later. Well, early he next day, Saturday morning, we set up the cooker for boiling water, the tripod to cut their lil' heads off and let them drip, the tarp for plucking feathers onto, and the hose and ice water for what was left.
We got 2 slaughtered, and then the propane burner thingy started leaking gas. Regulator? Anyhoo.....the 2 roosters left got a reprieve.
Now, 2 of the roosters got 1 week of free range....plus water and feed. I had the other 2 roosters in the cages with the hens. About midweek, I asked fiance about switching them out, as we had had no problems with neighborhood dogs since he scared them off shooting at them, that first morning. Big Boy rooster had a week of free range, no problems. The others had a week also, no problems. Well, that Friday, a week ago, I let them all out. 2 in cages, not secured. 2 free range. We were awake at 330 am on the next morning. Heard some noise out front. The dogs had come back. All 4 roosters were gone. All I found was a leg.
Fiance was a bit upset. He wanted to have one or 2 roosters left. Well, I reminded him that I had put the 2 meanest roosters in the little unsecured cages, all day...just shade and water...no food. They were to be slaughtered ones the next day. Being they were the aggressive ones, and hungry, I figured 1 might come back. Well, one did. He escaped. Came back about 630...limping....no bloody...missing a few wing feathers...and looking for some feed and water. Woo hoo!!...we got 1 roster back.
