Amy, you have mentioned a few times that the change in the weather is hard on the chickens. This is our first fall/winter with chickens, so what do we need to watch for? Is there anything we can do to help them get through tis time of year easier-extra protein, vitamins, etc? Also, what do we need to do to make sure the coop/run is ready for winter? Lou Ann and I are off work next week (and would love to visit your farm if we think we can resist some chickens), and plan to work on getting things ready for winter and EGGS!

I have one silkie baby that hatched yesterday. A few more in lockdown.

I think the lightest one in front (staring down the camera

) is the rooster. Very brave and outgoing, and even has a more 'sculpted' rooster look about him

ok so my white D'uccle laid another egg today but this one has translucent lines like cracks all over it and you can feel them like ridges...should I attempt to hatch or call this one a loss?

Another chicken lover added to our group! Well, okay, he/she won't be here for a while but I bet the little booger will be sitting on Daddy's lap and watching the screen. And not long after cooing at the chicken photos and after that.....wow, I better slow down and let you enjoy that new baby! I love babies! Congrats and enjoy!

Your Lionheads look fabulous. Amazing that they don't win but then remember what I say about judges, too. As much as we love going to the shows, it is more about the friends we have there than the actual showing. We could never tell the difference between our BIS winner and ones that only took BOB. I guess it is what is there on that day that matters.

Yes, I would have fell out had I seen you throwing eggs over the back fence!

Yes, the males can get along. We have a few cages with 2-3 boys in them. The trick is to find ones that like each other. Some can't get along while others chummy right up so we have had a few skirmishes. Leah can't stand to hear them chatter at each other so she will pull them right back out f they do. I wait to see fur flying before I remove any. But we often have them ignore each other or just sniff and talk about the food dish or girls they have in common. Most of ours are breeding boys and still get along. It is helpful to put very young ones together or a very young one and an old one.
