Thanks for the motivation! I have a question, since we're all in SC and most of us don't have to deal with freezing of water and such.... what does everyone use as a water container. Anyone devised an automated watering system that they like?

I would not ever consider automatic waterers because I want to know how much my birds are consuming and it is easy to get slack and not notice if it is even working. I have a friend out west that lost a flock because it stopped working and she didn't notice until too late. She thought they were just begging for more treats or wanting out of the pen. What a horrid thing to have happen.

That is horrible. On my drum drinkers it's easy enough to see if there is any water in the tray or not. And the drums are light colored so we can see the water level thru the drum. I check water daily, just a habit. It's nice to be able to walk on by and not have to fill them up everyday but I still check. Last summer it was so hot I was filling drinkers 3 times a day and they were still running out of water. That's not good. Even after adding more buckets they would turn them over trying to get into the water and cool off. Silly birds. I don't like those nipple drinkers that some people use. I don't feel like the birds can really get a good drink of water with them. And I would worry that it would freeze or stop working and I wouldn't know it.

How pretty! I know Jonah is totally loving his new horse! What is his name?

His name is Mike!

He's 16 years old so we won't be changing his name. Jonah likes his name, it's easy to spell.

I would bet somebody had a snack.

Well lets hope that it was because the egg broke in the pile...if thats it!! I woulkd think if it was an EGG EATER all my eggs would have been wiped out...

Also on a funny note, I have been getting my blue egg the last 2 days before noon...so I set up to work outside so I could see the coop but was a good ways away...that bugger waited until I left at 2 to lay so I still dont know which of the 3 is laying!! Sneaky chickens

When they all lay in the same box sometimes an egg will get cracked and then it's just irresistible. That's just a guess. But if my girls see a cracked egg, one will snatch it up and run with it while the others chase her for a taste too. They are funny creatures. You need to get yourself a game camera set up in the coop to see who is laying what and when.

I need more silkies, I will either go to Susanne's or Mary Robbins in Ga (if she would do pick up).
Those are the two best sources I know within driving distance. I have been

over Susanne's lavenders.
I just don't have the room or the energy to build another pen now. I am still sore for the one I built this past week.
Hopefully, I will be raising some nice ones next spring/summer.

Lauren do I remember you looking for bb red OE? If so, I found a local contact for you.

I would love to have you! And my buffs are doing better. I know you wanted those.

I actually had my first chicken injury today at the hands of another chicken. Makes me sick. One of my buff roosters apparently got into it with another one. His comb is half gone and his head behind is comb is a big, bloody gash. It looks horrible! Luckily my vet brought out her friend who is also a vet and sees a lot of chickens. She gave me some advice. It was pretty shocking to look in the run and see his bloody head. The other rooster has left the farm. I'm not putting up with that. Plus this one was better quality anyway.

Muffin's surgery went well. Cole had to sit on the donkey's head during the surgery. They couldn't quite get him all the way out. But he's up and around now. The vet couldn't believe how much friendlier our animals are now. When she came out for my other donkey, it was quite an event catching him and getting him for her. Now everyone was gathered around and letting me love on them while we waited. Nurturing and attention works wonders!

I'm jealous - I have 4 brooders full of chicks IN the house and 5 brooders outside. I really NEED to get these birds out of my house.

You do! I just took a long bath and loved it! I have no more chicks in the house. Yay!!!
