Just wanted to share a few pictures of my new barn coop. The chickens are happy in there and there seems to be enough room for a few more birds so I'll be moving some more tomorrow. Next project is a brooder room on the other side of the barn.

Front door with a rooster standing ready to greet all guests.

Temporary yard in back of the coop. I have no idea why this picture is showing big and the others are small. I'm still trying to figure this new stuff out.

Hooray! A new coop! With lots of chickens already in their new home! It looks like you divided it in half? I know you are really enjoying having them all in one spot and they will be glad to have the wind knocked off of them when those winds blow. Feed will stay dry and maybe the waters won't freeze. How exciting for you! Congrats!

Whew! That is a relief. I would like them to be in June as that gives me the warm months to grow them.
I look forward to your PM so we can get you going on incubating and fine tuning those skills needed for successful turkey egg hatches.
I did not know turkeys laid eggs this time of year. Interesting. I really need to start studying up more on them but it is early and I don't want to forget all I learn before I have the hands on experience to put with it.
Have you eaten turkey eggs? What is their taste like?

Turkey eggs are somewhere between chicken and guinea eggs, Thicker shell and membrane than chicken eggs, but you don't need a chainsaw to get into them like a guinea egg.
and the eggs are speckled and super jumbo sized. I thnk the albumen (white) is thicker too. huge yolk. when you crack it on a large plate, it flattens out, but makes an oval shape, just like the original egg shape. the yolks separate from the whites very easily.
I cannot tell a flavor difference, but it does take more effort to scramble them.

I have a nasty Roo named Scrappy who whoops me everyday...it helps he is less than 9 inches tall!!! I carry a tennis raquet in his coop!!

Phoebe is a HOT MESS...she's a spoiled brat(due to her dog sitter(my mom) ). But both my dogs are great with all the chickens. I think they have the fear of ME.

Piper and Phoebe know that chickens are NOT to be messed with. Now if I could Teach that nasty roo that I'm the boss. My Goodness he hates me. URG ARG...I have even been consindering gettting a Blue Orp Roo, and leaving the JG roo... But it feels like family, so well we know you just have to put up with it... I just wish you could see me fight that Huge Roo in the backyard..it has to be way to funny. Cause he doesn't back down...

Just wondering if anybody else has a Roo that is nasty to you, but good to his flock.? Cause my Roo Rocks with his flock, but oh so nasty to me!! lol

Thanks Heidi, this week I've had fox, coyote, the neighbors 2 dogs and numerous hawks. Not to mention my own dogs.

Tonight I have 107 layer hens locked up tight in my new barn coop. I'm so excited, pictures to follow soon. Tomorrow I will be moving more of the layers into the barn. Now to get these birds laying better. Right now I'm worried about my ducks as they sleep out in the yard. Hopefully I will be able to convince them to go into a fenced yard at night.....

I'm planning to bribe them with their swimming pool. We haven't filled it up for a few days since it's been below freezing. They'll be excited to have a bath and maybe they will go wherever I put that pool. At least that's my plan.

I hope this worked for you ducks! The only thing we have sleeping out right now are the French guineas and a few of the standard guineas that have escaped. I really would like to get rid of the French guineas but not by predator attack.

Why the French Guineas? Dont they bathe or shave, are they rude to everyone and think they are better than everyone? just wondering.

Forgot to add that my Standard Cochins have started laying! Found one egg yesterday, two this morning!

I"m a bit surprised where they are laying them however. We built a couple of nest boxes and set them under the roost, but they ignored those. Instead, I had left a door to a brooder open and they are laying them in there

Not that it is a big deal, it makes it much easier to collect the eggs since I don't have to bend over... I'm just sayin..

Susanne this is a SteelMaster barn that my DH bought several years ago and never "got around" to putting up. So I did the only thing a wife can do....motivated him by collecting a few hundred chickens and then I bought a horse. We NEED a barn!

Here's a pic of it while we were working on it. It goes up in ribs, 2 foot sections. We had to put the ribs together and then stand them up. It's supposed to be a really strong building once it's standing. It doesn't move in the wind we've had this week. I've taken the left third of the building from front to back for the chicken coop. There will be a central hall down the middle and the right front corner will be my brooder room. Behind the brooder room on the back right corner will be the walk in stable for the horse. The horse and chickens will share the pasture (when we get the pasture fenced). This is the only picture I can find of the whole barn and it isn't finished here. This is during construction. I'll have to get another picture of it now. I can't wait to have my brooder room and horse stable done too. I'm hoping the central hallway will be wide enough for some horse tack storage shelves/cabinets to hold saddle, helmets etc.
