Our 6 little peeps are doing well. They have ventured out to the rest of the whelping box, and enjoy exploring the big room they have. My female dobe thinks they are hers and would love to get in that whelpng box and nurse the pees. Somehow, she doesnt get it that they dont nurse.

Goodness it's pretty out today! But very windy here..and the warm winds seem to have all kinds of hawks flying around my house

They just better stay away from my birds! I swear...one day I WILL have more than 3.5 acres and I WILL have a LGD! Then I wont have to worry about it! There's just not enough room that I could realistically fence in around my chickens to put a dog in there. I have plenty of room on the other half of the property already fenced...but the chickens aren't there so it'd do no good! I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful day! I know I will! I'm off work today and tomorrow

From what I understand the hawks are all busy figuring out where they want to nest and who is getting a girlfriend. They aren't all that interested in taking out chickens right now.

Good to know! lol..They were wayyy up and I watched them for a while. They didn't seem to be interested in stalking my chickens...for now that is. Eek I hate hawks! Thanks for the info!

DH has agreed for us to have a "chicken experiment". BWAHHHHAHAHa So after being AWOL for a few years I am back and shopping for my first chickens. I know that I would like 4. At least one Buff Orp., some colored egg layers, and some other heritage breed. I am in Florence SC.

Been trying to catch up. Had a bad week -- lost the one peacock, the other is not looking great but I am treating him the best I can. And also Monday, the Dominique chicks I bought at the show started passing blood(reason to not buy anything but hatching eggs). I put them on sulmet and thought I had caught it but lost both cockerels and one pullet. I have one other pullet not looking great that I forced some sulmet water down last night. She is eating today and drinking water. The person I bought them from at first tried to say I must have put them in a dirty pen but he has since lost a few himself. What a sad thing to deal with. I did do my first postmortem exam on the first cockerel to died and found textbook cocci ~"Eimeria tenella". The person I purchased them from admits he put them on the ground to eat some grass a day or so before the show. They were 4 weeks old at the show. He was a believer that if they were on medicated food they would not get cocci.

Patsy, my Dorking chicks are still doing good and I have gotten them out of the shed where the sick chicks are. They were never with those chicks and I am really glad now of that. I am keeping my fingers crossed they do not get the cocci bug. They are eating great and enjoying the bigger hutch.

I also have my first batch of chicks hatching since my break--they started yesterday and hopefully will finish today. I had 90 eggs to start with and only pulled about 5 or 6 clear ones. I was expecting more to be clear. I do not like to hatch that many chicks at once. What a mass of chicks I had in there this morning.

I have had a cocci fight with chicks on medicated and in a well kept brooder...it is an awfull thing to deal with...

My orloffs from the show are doing well so far...one gal has not grown as much as the others and the roo and one hen are huge...I am moving them in with 3 I have outside thier size because they are too big for my inside brooder.I am praying it will not be a mistake breaking thier quarantine but I really need more outside grow outs with how I am breeding/hatching...I just know if I keep them like they are they may get ill...I cannot keep the brooder clean because of the roo!! He has doubled in size and is as big as my adult D'uccles!! I swear I saw someone was going to have peafowl eggs at the Aiken swap Sat...Wish I could go but I need to spend a catch up weekend home with DH...he is only availible to help me with farm projects 2 days a week!!
